74 f100 fuel leak

Hello all I've lurked for a while but need a little help. I'm not a car guy but am handy and can complete some tasks with clear directions.
i have a 1974 f100 8cyl 302. It hasn't been driven in a few months but always starts easy and runs great. So I finally get it out from where it's been stored in my backyard and I know I parked it with a full tank but alas the tank is empty. So after changing the oil today I was able to see where it is dripping from. But I don't know what the heck it is. Can someone Id the part for me. It's a the clear thing on the right going into the fuel pump.

Welcome to FTE.

That clear thing on the right is a fuel filter....looks like 5/16" in/out.... with - should have - a 3/8" line. From the looks of the picture, your rubber lines should be replaced, too. Replace 'em with some EFI rubber lines as they're made for today's junk gas. A bit pricey, though.

I would also run a filter from the fuel pump to the carb...just to be on the safe side.

Hope you have hard lines from the tank....or, as much as feasible.

Those glass fuel filters are treacherous. After installing the C6, I fired the truck up only to hear the neighbor yelling it leaks!

Turned out to be the glass fuel filter and not the transmission. The end of the filter unscrews to change the element. Mine somehow unscrewed itself even though it wasn't touched during the transmission rebuild. Since I didn't trust it and the element looks like it would pass small mammals, I replaced it with one of those translucent WIX filters. Also replaced the hose.

Welcome to FTE. X2 on its an old style glass fuel filter, you can take it apart (unthread) and clean it out....I would swap it for a one piece plastic (99% less prone to leaks from vibrating loose and being the possible cause of a fire).

I really doubt that you can leak a complete tank of gas from a system that requires you to have the engine running to pump/pull fuel to that filter. Unless you have a none vented fuel system and it got hot from outside temps and built up some pressure and leaked over a long time???

Thanks for the welcome.
So new fuel filter and hoses. Seems pretty straightforward.

I don't know if it's vented or not, but I do recall researching for a new gas cap and I needed the one without eec.

It probably sat for 3 months, it does get hot here in Florida and it might not have been a full tank but more full than empty. Could that add up? Or might there be another culprit.

I finally expanded my driveway so as to have easy access to the truck and drive it much more. Any additives I should be using. I heard something about zinc I'm the oil. And there is a place close that has ethanol free.
Thanks again for the advice.

Welcome to FTE! Lots of good people here, and often willing to help.

There's another thread going right now about zinc enhanced oil. The zinc can help prevent wear, and is required for new bearings and camshafts. Also recommended for our engines which don't have catalytic converters.

Make sure to get the right gas cap. Some of the new ones don't vent as expected and you can end up with fuel delivery problems, exploded or imploded tank, or fuel pump problems.

As said above, replace the fuel hoses with EFI style hoses-they stand up to the alcohol in modern gas better than cheap hose
