Minimal Smoke with Block Heater vs. Blue Haze without Block Heater
I've noticed when I used my block heater (usually at 25*F or below), it certainly starts easier and there is minimal blue smoke. When I don't use my block heater at the same temps, it takes a few more labored cranks to start and there is a lot of blue smoke. Why is that and does this signal a problem?

No, there is not a problem. Cold diesel engines do not run well. Ignition of diesel requires very high temperatures to work right. For longevity of your engine, a block heater keeps the oil thinner, so your injectors work better. The block heater keeps the whole block warmer, making those combustion chambers much more efficient at burning that diesel. That is why many recommend warming up the engine if towing or hard work is going to be done.
