2001 Ford F250 Super Duty occasionally starts. Fuel Pump?
Hi all,
I have the gas 5.4l in my 01 F250 Super Duty. I had to change out the leaking Heater hose before I could attack this other issue.
The truck starts when it feels like it. I changed the fuel filter and it started fine. Then the next day it wouldn't. Later it would. However each time it does start it dies when throttled up. I am down to thinking it is the fuel pump. My question is, because changing the pump sucks about as bad as changing the heater hose. Can I install an inline fuel pump and deal with the sump pump in the tank later? Are there any Cons to doing this?
Thank you all and have a great upcoming week.

May be, you should do more diagnostics to be sure it is the fuel pump. Here are few:
1- Fuel shut-off valve at passenger side kick panel , Do you have 12V there (when key is ON - for about 2 seconds).
2- Check pressure regulator
3- Buy/borrow a fuel pressure tester and check fuel pressures at idle and WOT .
Good luck,

I know nothing about any kick late on the passenger side. The fuel tank and filter are on the drivers side. Perhaps a bit more direction. I believe you are trying to make a point or guide me, but I am not getting it. Thanks for a little more clarity.

I wanted to update as there are many that fix the issue and do not come back to share the fix to help others. Turned out it was the fuel pump. Since the truck is not something that will give me fits as far as the bed I ended up carefully cutting access through the bed to the fuel pump area of the tank. When I pulled the pump I found the screen so caked in dirt that there was a layer outside of the screens. I replace the pump while I had it out and the screens as well. I replaced the fuel filter and still had hesitation. I found that the injectors had been affected since it was so long and in bad need of being replaced. Problem solved and all is well.
