Steering Column Help
I have a 1966 F100 that I am building and I want to leave the manual steering but would like a little shorter steering column for more room. I really don't want to pay 4-500 bucks for an aftermarket and was wondering if there might be something that would interchange and be a few inches shorter from a junk yard without doing a lot of fabrication to make it fit. Any suggestions.

If you're up to dismantling the column, you can section and shorten it. You have to measure carefully and be sure and keep the tubes straight when you weld them (or someone else welds them). You need to shorten the shift tube the exact same as the column tube. It's best not to weld the shaft, so it can be shortened and re-splined, or easier to mill the end to a double-D and use a universal joint rather than the rag-joint. Borgeson makes all possible combinations. I took out 4-inches from my 78 auto tilt column to fit better in my 66 truck and it turned out fine...cost of modification = $20.00 to mill the "D-D" on the shaft.
