4r100 Lost All Gears

Just posting this in case it's helpful for someone searching in the future, And trying to figure out what would have caused this.

Received a call from one of my employees this morning saying they lost all gears in the trans, My first thought was something transfer case related since I had just rebuilt (And upgraded) the transmission a year ago. After verifying that it was not the transfer case the pan was dropped to make sure the filter Hadn't just dropped out. All was fine there, Fluid looked and smelled good and no metal savings in the pan. Checked the feed bolts and those were tight. So remove the trans it is.

Below is what I found. Any ideas what would cause this? Or just a random mechanical failure? Also, just replace the pump gear and reassemble or should I be checking for other things while it is apart?

I did that once back in the day when I installed the C4 trans in my 63 Falcon. I failed the properly align the toque convertor. I just could not get the case to mate up with the engine! Then it did. Yep I fired her up and she did not go ether. Broken front pump.

My main question would be where the missing gear/pump parts are. Did something else fail to cause the pump to fail?

Parts are all there, The gear split / expanded (if that makes sense) The only damage I can find is slight wear on the torque converter where it was spinning inside the broken pump gear until the truck was shut down.

And my question is also, is there anything that could have caused this or just a random happening?

The pump could have been defective (cracked). Another possibility is the torque convertor could be defective where the pump mounts.
