Pulling 43 15K 5thWheel Stay 6.0 or go 6.7?
#16
Hi Guys - I ended up deciding to keep the 06. I also forgot to mention when the orginal work was done a new oil cooler was added.
So since I kept it and before my next pull I did the following:
- SCT Livewire with tunes from Innovative
- trans oil change and added 08 filter and cover
- coolant flush and switch to Rotella ELC-Cat1 rated
- coolant filter
- differential fluid change to Royal Purple with 08 diff alum / slotted cover
- high idol mod
- oil change Rotella Synthetic and Amsoil additive added
- got only leak taken care of on rear main between tranny and engine
I did not like the original tow tunes i got from Innovative but I had them redo them, and pulling up the smoky mountains it did great. Also, just as or more importantly, the combo of Torque shift and SCT jakebrake handled coming down the hill great. Started at 40MPH and never got over 50MPH.
Climbing the biggest/longest stretch, the fan came on once for about 2 mins and the temps came down right away. My mechanic could not get to my CCV mod (closed system with Racor 4500) done when I had the aforementioned work done, so when I take it back for that mod I am adding mod for grounding bluewire to upfitter switch to manually turn on fan manually just incase in the summer I want to flip switch before climbing up hill. If I have heat issues during summer pulling load then it seems best investment is 97 7.3 fan clutch mod is best bet, but hoping not to since the truck did really well under the most likely strenuous conditions outside higher summer temps.
I got over 1200 EGTs a couple times but never over 1300. It stayed there for less than a minute and I was smart enough to let off as well. Is it okay to hold that for a few minutes if climbing? What can I safely push the temps and for how long in your opinion(s)? Thanks for all your input and glad I kept the truck, really handled the hardest trip it will most likely see here in the east : - )

Glad its working for you.
Can't help you on the tune - I am purposely leaving mine untuned so I can just hold the throttle to the floor and let it go, no need to worry about EGTs .
I've actually overheated with our 16k GVWR trailer outside Vegas (TWICE!) during the summer, but that's a long loooooooong grade and we're talking over 110F ambient each time. I wouldn't mess with the fan clutch too much. When the fan comes on continuously and LOUD that's when you know the temps are getting high - doesn't sound like you've gotten there yet.

Hi Folks. Just wanted to post incase others came across this thread and are looking for feedback in terms of setup. Pulled 15k pound camper 8 hrs into Kentucky up / down and over mountains. Truck did great. Love the SCT tune with j-brake. Between that and transmission's tow mode it handled coming down mountains just fine. Passing or being passed by 18 wheelers also results in zero swaying. The only thing that I needed to do was keep an eye on EGTs going on longer up hill pulls but its just making sure I use the gas pedal correctly. I have the fan switch mod but didn't need to turn on manually. Also, the Oil and Coolant temps always were in the safe range.
Also added to the list of upgrades:
- Leece Neville 230 Alt with Overdrive pully (old one died and so did batteries)
- FICMRepair Alternator Wiring kit & Fuse Holder w/250AMP fuse
- Battery Tender under hood
- 2 New Batteries
Unless I run into some serious money I will be keeping my 2006 F350 KR Dually for quite some time and not upgrading to a newer truck, especially since I only have 32K miles on it : - )

Awesome Good report, sounds like the engine is going good for you.
I lived in Colorado for a long time, pulled I-70 where they do the Ike Gauntlet tests, lots of passes, etc, but whoever said East Coast hills are bumps is wrong. There are a couple of no-joke grades in Eastern Tennessee that are significantly worse than many of the interstate grades out west. And once you're off the federal highways you can see some crazy grades over those little "bumps". There's a 6% grade on I-20 in the middle Texas (comparison - the Ike gradient is 7%) on what it otherwise one of the flattest runs across the state. There used to be no way to tell you're about to go off a cliff right up until you do, which is why the state spent $120M on fixing the road - a 6% downgrade on an s-curve is a bad surprise.
