Calling duraspark wiring gurus.
I have a 1984 f150 302.
Past: The truck had a duraspark setup.. some of the wires were hacked up at the coil by the previous owner and taped with electrical tape.
I swapped in a 86 HO 302. The engine came with one of those cheap ebay HEI distributors.
I want to switch it back to duraspark but confused on the wiring. looking online it gets confusing what goes where and how.
Currently my switched power feeding the coil (HEI Chepo) is from a red white stripe wire.
I assume this will go to the coil for the duraspark (dont remember red white wire when duraspark was in may have been the wire spliced and taped up)
I keep seeing stuff about balast resistors and starter relays.. I dont remember all that stuff.. I disconnected the green wire put it in the loom. I guess the red and white wire I tested it, it was low on voltage, I ran a relay to get 12v to the HEI setup.
also the red white wire looks to be sourced from a red green stripe wire.
the glue on my duraspark box is melting or falling out. can I seal it and reuse it? or should I do the gm 4 pin conversion?
other than the ground/condensor, Is there only one wire to the coil+ for the duraspark setup?
Will a 85 mustang duraspark distributor fit an 86 HO motor provided it has the steel gear? I ask because something about shaft lengths.
Thanks all

I have seen some good pictures of how this gets wired up. Do a search or look in the stickies at the top. I have not looked to deep into this so cant say what all needs to be done.

I don't know what you could seal it with that would not hurt the parts inside if it made it that far.
Why would you do the GM 4 pin conversion? Just stay with the GM HEI as it has the 4 pin inside, it uses the dist. body as a heat sink and it real easy to tune the advance on (it's up top) and get parts for both advance & 4 pin unit.

Can't say, see first post.

Is the 85 Stang dist. a DSII unit or TFI?
Also I want to say the shaft I think was the oil pump drive shaft? Longer or shorter for the dist.?
Thanks all

What is wrong with the HEI? We get people on here all the time with dist wiring problems, and sometimes recommend the HEI as a work around to get them running again. And they usually get the cheapest they can buy.
I have never run one so I have no personal experience with the Ford conversion dist's, just the true GM HEI's on a GM engine. If there is a problem we may need to quit recommending them.

The potting melting out of your module is a sign of long term overheating.
From personal experience I can say the NAPA Echlin TP-40 is a good replacement.
Yes there is only one 'hot' and the green is both tach and ground going to the module.
I had an '85 notch, that distributor should fit the truck 302 fine.
(I do remember some talk about shaft lengths being an issue swapping from a TFI distributor)

Thanks FuzzFace and Ard
Ok so after not sleeping last night and digging deeper this is what I have found or come to a conclusion.
My red white wire is red green and will go to the coil
I found the motorcraft modules and they seem to be cheaper part #dy-893
The condensor/capacitor goes to the coil+
green is thr coil-/tach
red yellow is not used
redish purple with thin white stripe is coolant sensor.
The shaft below the gear on a 86 distributor is longer than a 85. Consensous on other forums is the 85 will fit the 86, but an 86 has fitment issues on pre-86.

I have had nothing but issues with the HEI style ford cap.
The coil crapped out on it, replaced it with a GM coil.
Then the module crapped out, replaced it with a gm one.
It does not have a clean tach signal on good days I get a 1-200 difference. On bad days (with idle set at 800) it will jump from 629-1021 with no change in actual rpm or idle.
When the engine warms up the wires plastic to fills like it will slide off if you touch it..Feels so rubbery.
The rotor is getting some pretty bad burn spots, The old one had it under the rotor button the replacement now has it on the edge (makes me think somehow spark is jumping to the module bolt).
I use coupons so for about $45 I can get a new duraspark, My old duraspark module may have overheated due to the crud in the connectors.. I am going to try seam sealer to seal it back up and clean the connector.

My HEI has crapped out because the steel weights that "replace" vac timing sized. Left me on the side of the road. before it went, it would occasionally Spit and sputter, then purr great for days than spit and sputter. One day last fall it spit and death was quick.
Got a warranty new one and after six months it is spitting again, Also the HEI does not have "initial start timing feature"
I to am going back to Duraspark this spring. I have a new "recurved" dizzy, and two NOS DSII boxes. Then found a harness and 2 coils off ebay.......

Well the time has come to change over to the duraspark side... I figured the coil was going out.. swapped in another one.. No start... ok new module and swaped back the coil.. same issue.. cut the truck off, then no start. got it back running but forund this.......
The reluctor looks to be rubbing on the pickup coil, the mechanical advance will not move without force.
