MSD 6A/ 6AL

Any one running the MSD 6a/6al box in place of there Dura spark 2 ( BLUE GROMMIT )ignition box .Curious to know what coil your using with it and how are you wiring it. (white trigger etc).I called frick and frack at MSD and forgot to ask about the coil. Emailed them last week with no reply. Frick did tell me that the resistor (ballast) wasn't needed , so I am assuming the coil needs to be changed .Thanks TR

An MSD Blaster 2 Coil will work. Wiring diagrams might be found on the MSD web site.

I use the MSD 6a with a DS2 distributor. I use the MSD street fire TFI coil, straight 12v. I don't use the white wire.

There are several wiring diagrams on the MSD site.

Nope, no tach, but often think about getting one. I know that when I switch to a manual trans I will need a tach.

On my 1986, I am using the MSD 6AL box with the stock square TFI coil and I have the factory tachometer.

On the end of the MSD 6AL box, is a terminal for the tachometer lead. I figure that this is due to the fact that if the tachometer lead was attached to the coil, the multi sparks would interfere with the tach.

Got the MSD installed and used the blaster coil. Also installed the MSD capacitor as I did in the Bronco years ago . I used the gray wire from the box and the Sunpro tach is alive .I am feeling a stronger steady increase in throttle .The idle is about the same. I also changed the plugs(Motorcraft) and gapped them at .054 with new wires(Motorcraft) .With only 50 miles since the install hopefully fuel mileage will increase. TR

I love my MSD, but there are a couple of things that bother me. The main thing is I go through distributor caps, and rotors, quite often. I learned that if I bought the expensive Borg Warner cap and rotor, O'reiley's offered a life time warranty. So, I have replaced them at least 4 times, free!

Another thing you should be aware of is that if you use the type of timing light that clamps onto the #1 plug wire, use extreme caution using it. Stand on a piece of wood and/or use non conductive gloves when timing. A shock from the system is quite a jolt that will make you taste your fillings.

It never gets to the point of a misfire. It just seems to be not starting as quickly. I ck the cap and the contacts looks pretty bad, so I replace it. I guess I change it about once a year.

Curious about this myself...I just did a 6AL Blaster 3 conversion with DSII dizzy and I worry about cap and rotor wear now.

I like the idea about lifetime warranty free replacements as they wear...hehe

The kids who had the truck before my had the factory 84 dizzy (w/ control unit on side) that wouldn't advance and was set at 0* timing

But now she runs like a top..

I've been considering reverting to a points ignition and using it as a trigger for the MSD box. The Chinese modules are questionable. If ones dies it is without warning. Suddenly you're walking. Points go out slowly, plus, if the msd fails, you bypass it, and away you go.

I found very interesting reading on gofastforless dot com. Check the section on ignitions. The Chrysler ignition sounds fascinating.
