hi guys,

recently having my 7.3 idi running rough, idling problems by the sound of it is not getting fuel properly. also had the fuel filter light on for a couple of minutes the other day.

i'm switched to the front tank. haven't tried the rear one yet.

manuale says to disconnect the return line from the engine at selector valve and check fuel flow.

do you agree? any other suggestions?

If I recall correctly the Fuel Filter light will come on if the Injection Pump is pulling a vacuum on the fuel filter (which is not a good thing) and can mean there is a restriction in the filter or the fuel supply to the filter. When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced?

 

i replaced the fuel filter 16000 miles ago. (motorcraft fuel filter from rockauto)

what the vacuum would do to the engine?

i have used it today and it kind of stopped once the engine was warm. only after stoppini at the gas station went to turn it on and did it again. angine runs rough, with empty moments.

have another fuel filter on the way. going to repliche it as soon as i get my hands on it.

 

the fuel filter lite is activated only when the IP pulls on the fuel in the filter, this will only happen if ,1, the lift pump has failed, or 2, if the filter needs changed, 3 if there is a plugged fuel line. replace filter on warm engine only!! this will allow the engine to restart easily, you can fill the filter with clean diesel before install. the engine will idle for some time on the fuel in the fuel line to the IP and fill the filter in about 30 seconds.
