looking at an 08 that won't start

here is the info I have from the ad,
I am looking for an F450 but not sure I want a 6.4.
anyhow what are your thoughts, working on it is no problem for me.

I am selling my used 2008 Ford F-450 work truck. This truck has an 11' L service body bed all locking compartments.

Truck Information:
Year: 2008
Make: Ford
Model: F-450 Work Truck
Engine: 6.4L Diesel V8 (Needs work)
Transmission: Auto
Drive: Rear Wheel drive
Odometer: 106,365.

I bought this truck to put into my fleet of trucks for my company. The engine currently does not start or run, I am not sure what the issue is. This will make a great truck for someone who is willing to fix the engine and get it going. I do not have the time to mess with it otherwise I would. The truck could also use a new rubber floor inside the cab (see pictures).

Other than the engine, the truck has almost brand new tires. The body is in great shape and shows no signs of abuse, the toolbox is in good condition and all of the keys are included for the compartments.

Asking $5,950 obo.

1) need good batteries
2) need some type of scan tool to read the codes, do some research
3) was the rig dealer maintained of fleet mechanic? If dealer maintained then you might be able to see maintenance records at that dealership
4) need new fuel filters on frame rail and motor, read the procedure to for bleeding out the air

5) check codes with scan tool, write them all down
6) clear all codes with scan tool
7) attempt to start the motor
8) check for new codes with scan tool
9) look under the truck at the exhaust, determine if the 4 foot long looking torpedo containing the DOC (Catalyst) and DPF (Diesel Partical Filter) are in place or deleted
10) look at the motor with the hood open to determine if EGR Coolers are still in place, big logs on drivers side
11) look at Degas Bottle (anti-freeze overflow bottle) to determine if it is contaminated with black oil, it could look like a chocolate milk shake
12) pull the dip stick, look for milky residue as in high creme color chocolate milk
13) bring the observations and codes back to this thread

Do not use any type of starter fluid, if they did then walk away as the valves would be destroyed.

Research a used motor, last price I saw was $6700 w 120k on it West Coast.

don't know this as i have not made contact yet
4) need new fuel filters on frame rail and motor, read the procedure to for bleeding out the air
not willing to spend money until a deal has been made

always do

not concerned with emissions as i don't have to comply and will delete them if i buy it

good to know
12) pull the dip stick, look for milky residue as in high creme color chocolate milk
Another good point, I was going to pull a sample and send it to Lab One.

so My biggest question is what are the main causes of a no start on a 6.4?
this truck is 120 miles from me and to go look at it I have to close my shop for a day, than If I decide to buy it I have to schedule a tow truck to move it 120 miles at $4.00 per mile.
then I have to find a buyer for a service body as i don't have any use for it.

If you have to ask, you should not buy it.

spun bearings due to fuel dilution

blown can due to fuel dilution

blown lifters due to fuel dilution

internal damage due to coolant contamination via cavitation

Internal damage due to coolant contamination via egr leak

open or closed injectors due to metal particle contamination from blown high pressure fuel pump.

holes in pistons due to injector stuck open due to metal particle contamination from blown injectors

these repairs run from 11k to 17k

if someone would give me the truck for free, is part it out and then metal scrap what is left.

"I do not have the time to mess with it otherwise I would."

Do you believe that or does he know it's done and needs to off the truck?
plus it's a work truck so it could have had plenty of drivers which isn't the best for these trucks who cares more an employee driving a tool around or the owner of the truck.

your quest to learn is great good info above
Regardless
how much time and money do you have for this? Some jobs need the whole cab pulled not saying that's the case but are you ready for that possibility? Everything is pay to play even if you do the work your paying plus these engine aren't the simplest to work on.
