sputters and dies - trouble restarting

Hi guys, been having some trouble with the 7.3 midday/end of day after sitting 4+ hours. so engine not warm and not cold. cranks up just fine and doesent idle up as in cold start but temp guage is not at lower line of normal. I take off less than quarter mile on road - lose power engine sputters cannot keep it running and dies. cycle thru WTS a few times and crank on it...eventually it seems to start though rough. initally thought it was CPS since it has been rough idling in drive at stop lights, still doing it after replacing - then changed fuel filter and added some clean diesel last fillup. died on me twice tonight on way home from work. possibly fuel pump? still searching prior posts but hoping to expidite finding issue without throwing $$ at it in the dark
thanks guys- David

Very similar to problem another member is having. Sounds like IPR to me. Can you monitor your high pressure oil while driving and re-starting?

Dave,

Sounds like the socks in your tank are clogged. Been there done that.

So it will sit and idle at will sometimes. Otherwise your riding a bucking bronco???

You can punish it and try to push it to 60 mph but it dies off and stumbles at idle?

If that's a head nod, you have to pull the tank and clean the socks, or just do it once and do the mod to eliminate them.

If that's the symptoms, I'll point you to the hutch and harpoon mod within this forum, or you can just search it.

Sounds like a Bell ringer to me. If your pumping and can hear it with the door closed and all acc off below you with key on...........(wish I had a clown mask)........I would suspect the socks.

Denny

NicMike, got the IPC sensor on oreder from riffraff- just down the road so i can have part in hand by weekend...Diesel-D thanks for the reply i'll look into the tank mod/clean as its a 99 and i'm 2nd owner so don't think it's been cleaned and coworker in the know has mentioned it before ...but gotta wait till almost empty as thats a lot of fuel to pull and store....and waiting on warmer temp here in OR before getting too deep in outside projects as garage if full with other projects -55 chev and 66 skylark GS at the moment.
thanks ! David
