I like the idea of the improved mileage, but dread hearing a 2-stroke exhaust note! Jag

This thing wouldn't sound like any 2-stroke you've ever heard.

Just go to YouTube and search for "2-cycle diesel" and you'll be amazed at how they sound.. They do not buzz like a weed whacker or lawnmower at all...

Except a Detroit 2 stroke is loud and obnoxious, much like most other 2 strokes.

The only time they're loud and obnoxious is when some dipstick removes the intake silencer and muffler... They're actually less noisey than most 4 strokes of the same vintage.

A brand new article in SAE

Automotive Engineering - February 2017

Looks good. At least one OEM is tooling up for volumeproduction and Achates have 50 % of the leading OEMs as customers. Hope Ford is among them.

Very, very intriguing. I still get a bit of snake-oil salesmen in some of their statements, but they seemed to have momentum and interest from the industry. Looking forward to seeing who's the big player taking the leap of faith.

I like it. With the EPA breathing down our necks, something has got to be done to keep them rascals at bay. I hope this engine can do it, mpg wise, torque wise, power wise. I'll take one F150 with this engine, please. That'd be to go.

Not a new concept. The Germans made 2 stroke opposed piston aircraft diesel engines in the 1930s and through WWII, the Junkers Jumo 200 Series. The most famous was the Junkers Juno 205. They were known for their efficiency.

The Napier Deltic has always been one of my favorites. Opposed pistons arranged on a triangle.
