302 truck cam

Whenever I get my 95 F150 5 hours south to where I'm now living, I'm going to put in a lower KM engine. I'm probably going to pull the engine out of my 94 donor truck before i bring my 95 home, and figured since it has the normal 302 firing order I'd put a cam in it that has the 351 firing order( what my 95 has) What cam though? Looking for a little more working power( towing/hauling) and would like to go with something other than a stock 95 cam but still make power in the lower RPM range( e303/b303 are out of the picture ). The transmission will probably be coming out of the 94 as well since I'm cheap and don't want to buy one to rebuild it when I already have one that I know works but needs to have work done to it. I'd like to hear from people who have put a different cam in their 302s for more low end power if possible

Take a look here. It's a 347, but I would think the same cam would work.

All '94+ motors have the same cam and it is about as good as it gets for a 302 truck motor, add 1.7 rockers, longtube headers, and a single 2.5" exhaust to maximize output from 0-4500rpm.

Educate me. How do the 1.7 rockers help with performance? What is involved with installation? Thanks.

These are pretty much a straight bolt on if you use the pedestal mount version, some oil baffle clearancing in the valve covers is required but otherwise they will fit under the stock valve covers. They help performance by increasing total valve lift which will allow more air through the motor, same as installing a cam with higher lift.

When installing the 1.7 rockers on his stock cam will he have to check for valve lash, rocker arm geometry, and or lifter preload? Are new push rods advisable or can the old stock rods be used? Or is it just a simple bolt on of the new 1.7 rockers enough?

On a stock motor, meaning no other machining on the heads or block, it's plug-n-play therefore bolt on and go.

If the above equation is not met, it is highly recommended to check all of the geometry accordingly.

I've heard of a few good cams for these trucks, I just can't remember the specs and I can't find the thread they were on. I've also looked at the donor truck today while I was outside, and it does have the normal 302 firing order, not the 351 firing order.

From my understanding, the Comp Cam 35-512-8 is a bump from stock but basically achieve the same result by keeping your stock cam and adding 1.7 rockers. I'm essentially wanting to do what you are and have settled on that. The next step up is the 35-349-8 that is recommended. Anything beyond that like the 35-320-8 and might lose more low end grunt than you're willing to sacrifice. Just adding rockers will be a lot easier for not much more money but either way with any of these you'll want at least 4.10 gears if using stock tires and a new exhaust with headers and high flow cat.
