49 F1 power steering

My fault, I ignored your being specific to the pump. Most, if not all of the parts suppliers, (Midfifty, Speedway, etc), all carry the pump and hoses. The mount for the 302 is easy to come by in any salvage yard. Or, you could purchase the entire kit, pump/hoses/mount, from said suppliers.

I have a Borgeson mount that you might be interested in. You may have to use different spacers to align the pump with your pulleys

Here is a thread on the pumps: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...onversion.html
As you can see I used an Eaton pump from a '57 T-Bird and made my own mount using a CMC plasma cutter. I made several and I might have one mount left. If you are interested PM me.
If I were to do this again I would seriously consider electric power steering as it solves a lot of problems and is very efficient in that it does not draw as much power from the engine as a conventional mechanical pump with pulleys and belts. There are several kits available and of course most new cars are using various versions. Here is some infor for you: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post16663104
Hope this helps,

Nice setup Pete with that flat head..... I'm running a 302 so I ended up ordered a Borgeson power steering pump upgrade kit from Summit, comes w/pump, pulley & mounting bracket. Didn't think about going electric power steering on my 49.... maybe next project. Thanks for passing on the info.

Thanks Moe. That Borgeson kit should make a nice setup.
Here is a link to the son of that friend of mine who won the SCCA STU National Championship. His Acura has an electric water pump with no alternator. The water pump alone saved him 9 HP. The system uses so little power that they can run the entire race on battery power alone (with a power conditioner).
The electric power steering units are similar and since most OEMs are now using them on production vehicles the cost and reliability are getting better.
Please post some pictures here once you get your kit mounted.

Hi Pete, I tryed to post photos in the past but all that shows up in the message is data.....not sure what I'm doing wrong and how to get the photos posted, hope to figure it out some day. Congrads to your friends son winning the STU championship last September, I'm sure those extra 9 HP helped push him over the finish line!

I also have a 1970 302 in my truck. I used a pump from a 68 mustang. I had to replace after about 5 years and was able to buy rebuilt pump at local NAPA store. as far as bracket go to local swap meets or junk yards for parts. I got hoses from Gotta Show but they are expensive.
Good luck on your project.

Thanks Terry, I had a few Ford pumps & brackets hanging around but went with the Summit unit they offer for my 302. It's smaller, less weight and new so I won't be messing around with old stuff that might not work. So far the install is going ok except for some fuel pump/line & oil sender issues, all minor stuff.
