Front leak from Mazda M5OD M5R2 transmission on my 93 F150 4.9L 4x4
Had my truck parked pointing down my driveway idling to warm up yesterday morning. There was a good puddle of ATF from the transmission. Crawled under and it was coming out of the bell housing. Wiped it clean and saw it leaking out again at the opening at the bottom of the bell housing.
The sides of the transmission are dry. I fixed the upper three plugs a couple of years ago to fix those leaks along with new shift forks. Pretty certain that it's actually leaking from the input shaft.
Turned the truck around and it seemed not to leak pointing up hill, but I didn't have the time to wait and see if it started again. Thinking that the fluid has leaked and it's below the input shaft so it's only noticeable when parked down hill. Didn't have time to check the level, but I'll be doing that.
No leak with the engine off. Only comes out when running.
Not looking forward to pulling the transmission at all. Time to start looking for a transmission jack.
Am I likely to just be able to replace the seal? Possible internal issues that caused the leak or just a 23 year old dried out and cracked seal?
If I'm pulling the transfer case and transmission, I'm thinking on new seals all around on the removed components. Have a little seepage on the transfer case. Good time to replace the clutch disc, pressure plate, pilot bearing and slave cylinder. Can I go with an 11 inch clutch and is there any benefit compared to the stock 10 inch?
Just resurface the flywheel, or is it worth it to replace the flywheel? It's coming off to replace the rear main seal as I might as well do that.
The synchros are a bit worn so considering a full transmission rebuild. Hey it's out, why not. Looks like a rebuild kit is $150-ish.
Anything else that should be looked at or replaced since I'll be pulling the transmission?
