Installing Power Assist Steering - 1971 F-100

I have a power steering setup from a 1973 F-100.

I want to replace the tie rod and drag link before installing the new system.

Do I need to purchase the drag link and tie rod for a 73' or 71'?

What is a good reliable source for these parts?

Thanks,
Trever

I'm guessing the PS gearbox is a Saginaw unit. Does your truck have the stock front drums or Dentside front discs?

You use the linkage for the knuckles, that's where the difference is. There are two different lengths on the drag link, 30 3/4 and 29 1/2, measured from the left tie rod end hole to the far end.

Steve and Jared,
Thank you.

You are correct, the box I got from the 73' is a Saginaw unit. My 71' has the stock front drums, I will be keeping those for now.

Sounds like I need to measure my 71' current drag link and order the replacements based on those.

The 71' drag link / tie rod will work with the 73' pitman arm that came with the steering box?

Is your 1971 F100 2WD or 4WD?

Power assist P/S was only used on 1973/75 F100 4WD, 1975 F150 4WD & 1973/77 F250 4WD (High Boys).

F100/150 4WD's used Garrison power assist, these F250 4WD's used either Garrison or Bendix power assist.

F100/150 parts with one exception are not the same as F250 4WD with Garrison.

ALL the power assist parts are obsolete, very hard to find.

Power assist use a P/S control valve and ram cylinder. The manual steering gearbox is used, because it has nothing to do with the power assist system.
