54 Marmon Herrington C500 Build

Hello everybody I haven't posted here much, but I recently picked up a crusty Marmon Herrington CM504 with much help from GBSisson and he convinced me to do a build thread as I do an original restoration. I got the truck to my grarage about 10 days ago here's some pictures of the progress.

The pistons took two days to get out with a mix of ATF soaking, heat, acid, mini sledge, and a chisel. Cylinder bores look great though

Boy, you're not messing around. You've gotten right after it. Sure am glad you (and Gary) rescued the truck from its Orca Island ditch. Have you had time to see if there is any metal rot from its years in the rain forest? Hopefully nothing is seriously hurt. Thanks for the update. You might link your rescue thread here too so that part of the story stays connected. Stu

There isn't anything too bad as far as rot on the frame. I'm about 1/3 done stripping the frame to bare steel in preparation for POR-15 and there isn't more than some pitting. It's going to end up with a 9' Ford script flatbed I picked up from Gary so I'm smoothing out imperfections on the sides of the frame.

Very awesome!

Was it originally red?

Also looks like both the dually outside wheels got snapped off, never seen that before.

Perhaps snapped off with a Sawz-All. A good remedy for outer dual widow makers, plus probably helped with loading on the trailer. Do I recall correctly from the rescue thread that the rear is locked up which led to its abandonment in the ditch?

Here's the rescue thread for those who missed it. Stu

It looks like you got a great start on a worthwhile project. Do you have a vision for how you are going to put it back together? Will it be a work truck or for show?

Great to see the way you got right on it! From what I hear the pistons are out of the very stuck engine and frame is all bare metal as of this afternoon. To all of you I got a visit this afternoon from this young Orcas Island native. He came by this afternoon in what was once my shell of a stripped parts truck. A 1960 F350 stakebed that he put back together from parts.

Not to give him a swelled head, but he also plays college football and is transferring from a college in Minnesota to one in Eastern Washington, so he has a bit of time in the interim to pursue the interest that really counts. I believe some people are born with an internal drive to fix/build/invent/repair things. This guy is one of them. The bumpside is his dads. OK, I'll let him tell the story.

Here's pictures of my Dad's trucks (both within the last 12ish years), a 1972 F250 shortbed Crew and a 1959 factory original F250 4x4

Back to the C500, the rear axle (I believe to be a timken E105) appears to be pretty effed up. One axle snapped about 6'' from the splines with no remnants of the 6" to be found. Also the 3rd member assembly looks like it is held together by some steel wire. It's a 6.8 gear ratio and I'd really like to retain the original or original style axle if anyone is of help.

Can't imagine that it'll be terrible hard to find. It'll be the stock Ford third member. If it was me I'd next see if Chuck has one, then if not start yard searches. You've obviously already started here to see if a member speaks up and has a parts truck.

Gary mentioned to me a couple years (or so) ago that the F-250 4x4 I'd been watching on CL in San Diego (iirc) ended up on Orcas Island. And there it is. Stu
