Need help diagnosing P0708 Trans High range sensor

’98 Expy XLT 4x4 / 5.4l 196Kmi.
Need help diagnosing P0708 Trans High range sensor, I havebeen having problems with rats getting inside the engine bay and starting to buildnests, and for material they like insulation, foam, poly vacuum lines andwiring harness materials.
I was putting the hood up and parking near an outdoor lightbut then it rained and I ended up with water in the plug wells and resultingmisfire! I then bought moth ***** and placed them on top of motor in a coupleplaces but that’s not 100% so far either.
I’ve been thinking the trans code is related, so I’m stillnot ready to replace the range sensor switch because I’ve found 2 instances ofa damaged wiring harness in the engine bay, both times the little SOB chewedthe two wires leading from the harness a few inches before terminating into amolded black 2-pin connector with a mating grey plastic connector that has noleads coming out, which leads me to believe it is a Jumper installed at thetime of build depending on options…
I found the shift lever to be normal, not sloppy, the gearshift indicator is aligned on the column just slightly off center from the gearindicators, the motor will not start with shift lever in R or D positions, and theBrake lights do come on and the reverse lights illuminate with key on and the leverin Reverse.
I wasn’t able to find my multimeter but used my 12v testlight to find some power down to the connector body when unplugged from therange position switch on trans. I guess I needthe connector pinouts to back probe the connector and check for voltage in thevarious gears now. I cant see the harness where it exits the cab to inspect that either...
Thank you in advance!

Oh, and any advise to repel or "teach" the little suckers to stay out is appreciated as well!

I would first try parking somewhere else until they find another place to go.

Hah, that is a tough one, no parking near home, I'm on top of a hill surrounded by the critters, until I move I'm stuck...
Thinking about buying a small LED lamp to fully light it up under the hood at night!
And I also read Peppermint oil repels them so I'll look for that as well.
In the mean time though, It's pretty wet these days so I need to fix this to get around!

Wow, a reading lamp and a heat source. They'll never leave.

Yeah, I figured an incandescent bulb would do just that, so if I don't go too crazy with lamp size I hope it will be negligible in terms of added comfort, especially since I just got back from Home Depot with 4 of the mondo sized old school snap traps! Headed for the pantry now to look for peanut butter...
The gloves, are off!

Regarding the range selector switch -
I'm not having much luck finding the wiring diagram on line. So it looks like I'll have to crawl under and remove the switch (or probe the back of the connector, upside down) to find which pins are associated with each gear position on the shift shaft, then see if there are shorted or open circuits I suppose.
I can't help but think since the shifting seems normal and the previously mentioned tests would indicate all is correct that I would have the code?

My bad, I actually looked at those images but thought I was seeing many for the 4R70W trans, plus the post 96 model change had me confused...

I did also found a reference to a test procedure in the emissions chapter of my Haynes manual depicting the pinouts and will be checking things this morning.

Thanks Mark...
