The day of reckoning has arrived....

My County started diesel emissions this year. I'm hosed...

My truck is the early 99 so I have to have a cat.

I have a 5" exhaust with muffler.

I can get a waiver for one year to go without it. At some point, I will have to put one back on it.

I figured I would just bite the bullet now. Which one should I buy?

Thanks.

No recommendations, but I can't grasp a 17 year old truck being ungrandfathered.

That happens here, I'm loading up the fifth wheel and giving up the farm.

I could be wrong but I'm darn near positive that all 99-03 auto were non catalyst, only cali trucks, excursions, and manuals.

sticker under the hood should say non catalyst.

if you are going to get one, go magnaflow straight through cores. Cats do next to nothing for the 7.3 besides pack up with soot
and create a plug.

there are so many ways around it but I'm not going to elaborate.

My cali emissions Excursion has the sticker and no cat converter. Sticker is right by the hood latch mechanism under the hood.

Get the waiver.
This year can be used as a learning experience for you and your state/county.

Yep. My early bird came with a cat. Always thought it might be a good idea to keep it around. Hopefully never have to mess with it here but it's in the shed just in case.

Or go get a cat and punch it out, Or get a cat and flange it in for the test, remove for a spooled straight pipe if you want it...Its a simple fix that takes no more than an hour with a welder.

My county started up emissions for light duty trucks last year. All thanks to the idiots at Volkswagen who used modified software.
I have been thinking about replacing the cat on mine but dayum... the first place I looked and it was $350 just for the cat. Ugh

Yeah, if it was manufactured 2 months later, December 1998, I wouldnt be required to have one. Only the early 99's had them. Except the CA models I believe.

I disagree, The engineer and team who developed the programming was a genius in my book.. took our well educated EPA 9 years to catch it. That guy is sitting on a 3rd world country beach enjoying every bit of it. VW made millions if not billions off that secret, and I'm sure they rewarded it under the table. Good for him!

Can't blame it on VW blame it on the EPA that has no oversight and can sleep with the TSA for all they care.

Mine is a 10/98 e99 and it came with a cat. I too have to smog it after over a dozen years of not having to. F'n liberals.

I was in the same boat after moving to Washington state. Have to pass emissions to include a snap test while hooked to an opacity meter. I have a 4" Magnaflow high flow diesel cat that I paid around $300 for if my memory is correct. I have not seen any loss in performance or higher EBP or EGTs with it.
