I'm getting ready to do the hutch mod but where I live (northern Wyoming) I don't want a fuel filter like Tugley has. It looks great but I think where I live and what I do, deer hunting and elk hunting where there are no roads, driving over sage brush and downed trees, I think it would be in danger of damage. All I want a "FILTER" that acts more like the screens on the stock truck. I want it to mount in the frame just like the stock fuel pump. Any thoughts or suggestions?

2 cents: Then search for a "diesel fuel strainer" not a "filter." You already have a "filter" in the fuel bowl. Don't restrict fuel flow any more by adding another filter. The Riffraff one Scott pointed to is pretty cool.

(I think I am learning that Riffraff is the Blowsion of the diesel world... In the jet ski world Blowsion is known for its ultra high quality components but is often misspelled as "Blow$$ion.")

 

I used a filter made by Fuel Lab. They are very similar to the one sold by RiffRaff but are available with different size AN fittings, a cleanable SS 100 micron screen and come with a mounting bracket. It fits nicely in the frame rail right in front of the pump. I got mine with -6 AN fittings and was able to to get a 5/16 hose over the push lock fitting to the fuel pump for a nice tight fit on the fuel pump inlet. You could find them at Jegs.

 

Here's a few options I've used. Started with the Baldwin after calling and talking to one of the engineers at Baldwin. Then went larger with a farm tractor type, then went even bigger just because.

 

that fleetguard looks like they whacked the top of two filters and super glued them together.. like a horrible medial experiment.

Fleetguard is the one I'm using now. It's just so much bigger than the others it looks odd. The actual filter screen inside is one piece, although I can see where it looks like they had to glue two filters together to get one that big.

 

Look at the F350-6 pictures.
Wix 33007 is the top left equivalent ( I used for a year or two).
(It is the filter used on many Mercedes 300D vehicles)
Wix 33972 is top right equivalent (the one I use now-my favorite)
I have not used the bottom one .
I know the top two are diesel rated, I expect the bottom one is too.

The Wix 33972 is not completely equivalent, since the Case has 5/16 and 3/8 barbs. I have 3/8 line from the tank so that's great to have. Snip off the 5/16 to use the 3/8 barb on that side, then use the 5/16 on the pump side.

I tried to get that Fleetside locally, found two places that no longer carry but will not order a case just to sell me 2 or 3. Customer service in CA ain't like it used to be. Didn't even get a "have a nice day".

So, many thanks to this forum for the instructions for the Hutch and Harpoon mods. Finally encountered the problem with injectors sucking a lot of air a week or so ago. My buddy had experienced the same thing a few weeks earlier in his X and had dropped his tank to find the lower half of the rubber and plastic stuff GONE. I immediately confirmed my problem by putting fresh diesel to the fuel pump and it ran like a charm so that nailed it for me. Dropped the tank and sure snuff my rubber boot and black plastic tee was toast. So, I proceeded with the two mods and am happy to say all is well with the old gal now. Will be driving it back to work tomorrow morning for the first time since these mods. By the way, I have been running a Dahl 100 for quite a few years so that part was already in place.
Wish I had done this much sooner. Fortunately for me I was local headed home from work when this happened.

I know this thread is a bit old... but looking to do the Hutch & Harpoon mod. Been searching for inline prepump filters / screens. So far this is the best info i have found. Only problem is finding these filters. Since the fuel line is 3/8", I have been trying to find the fleetguard FF5288 filter. I can only seem to find them in a 12 pack. Any advice? Still using 1 of these 3 filters shown?
