1999 Ranger Start Issues
So a couple days ago I started my truck and it fired up like normal, but then sputtered out and died after a few seconds. I tried starting it up again and it did the same thing. I tried once more and it started up fine and I drove away.
It sounds like my truck is running out of breath or something and just sputtering out. Runs fine once it turns over though.
My issue is that it is happening almost every time I start it now. I have to turn it a couple times before it catches. Any thoughts on what this might be?

Next time it acts out on a start, cycle the ignition key from off to run 5-6 times, while listening for the fuel pump to turn on for a couple of seconds & cycle off but don't crank the engine, then go to start to crank the engine & see if it'll start & run normally & let us know what you find.

When I turn the key to battery, the fuel pump does turn on. If I let it sit in this position for a few seconds, it does start up normally.
Side question, how come only one side (passenger) unlocks when I hit the button on my key while the driver's side just makes a noise like it is unlocking?

OK, well if you find that you have to cycle the switch from off to run a time or two, to have it start & remain runing, it could mean that the fuel pump is getting weak, or that the fuel filter needs changing. The filter is scheduled for changing every 30K miles, so if its time for a change, do that first & see how the start/run problem goes.
On the door lock problem, will it work ok when the engine is running????

At this point we don't know if your truck is a 4x4. We don't know if it's an automatic or a manual - we don't even know which engine it has.

If you can hear it try to work, check the door lock ground connection thats located behind the drivers side floor kick panel.
