CDR-factory hole or rust-through?

Following my recent thread about blue smoke, I stumbled across a couple re: CDRs--didn't realize I had such a thing. One recommendation was to remove it and wash it out with gas, but not use compressed air. I did this, then decided to clean it up by wire-brushing the rust. On the face of the unit,in the installed position, I show bare metal enough to read the part number at 3 o'clock, the AC logo at 12 o'clock, and a small hole at 6 o'clock. The hole is about 1 mm in diameter (smaller than a pencil lead) and appears to be round, not irregular. The CDR unit seems to be made of substantial metal -16 ga?- that it shouldn't have rusted through.

Is this hole there by design, or is it a flaw, and I should get a new CDR?

something wanted me to say that hole was supposed to be there. but i just looked at a picture of a new one and do not see it.
so maybe someone drilled it to act as a drain?

Yup. First thing is that it is a diesel application. May be of some help to put some info in the initial post, or your signature.

Please post the specs of the vehicle you're working on when asking questions.
