I do a live tree every year that we plant outside after x-mas. So we have 19 trees that where x-mas trees in years past. Tallest is over 30' now and we try and find rare varieties.

Pat, we have them inside and the wife and kids decorate it up. I find by giving it two flats of ice cubes a day keeps it well watered and the roots cool enough that it does fine.
