Exhaust Noise...popping during startup

several months ago I noticed this popping noise after initial start, stops right before the idle drops to the normal range...@ 30 sec

this is what it sounds like

Is it a spark plug problem?
Fuel problem?
catalytic converter problem?

Normal or ok? and would this be covered under the power train warranty?...if it is the catalytic converter?

Truck has 40,000 miles...FYI..I use a Top Tier fuel 99% of the time.

It's really hard for me to hear the pop in the video. Your truck sounds good, like you have a modified exhaust. Maybe it's just the camera right at the exhaust.

Cold exhaust systems sound more raspy and pop and crack more than hot exhaust, it's also a richer mixture of fuel on cold starts. If you have a louder exhaust, this will be magnified.

I hate to even bring this up and worry you, but one of the few problems these motors have on occasion is valve problems. A bad valve can cause a popping/puffing sound in the exhaust. But from what I could hear, I don't THINK you have that problem.

Almost sounds like a rattle from the exhaust itself, like its tapping on something on the body

When cold starting, the ecm retards timing and possibly camshaft timing. This is so that the catalytic converters are heated up quickly to control emissions. I noticed same thing on mine, but just part of normal emission controls we have nowadays.

Where are you recording at, tail pipe or by the engine. Mine makes a similar noise up by the motor, on mine its the belt. You can watch the belt slap in time with the noise, it also goes away in a short time.

yes, only at the tail pipe can you hear this... you can't hear this in the truck...no knocking sounds from around truck either.

Seems to run fine with no roughness while the noise is going on.

You made me look or should I say lessen and mine doesn't make that noise at the tailpipe on startup, the temp was 66 outside. If it's cold out I wonder if it would make it.

My 08 mustang had a noise just like that, it was the rear hanger for the exhaust was knocking against the frame, from the noise in the video it sounds metallic and not an exhaust popping.

I was at the tailpipe and did a cold start with the air temperature at 16 degrees and didn't notice any unusual noise from mine. I would check the hangers and catalytic cover in case you have a similar situation to Tarser's Mustang.

Mine sounded like that. I had the front port on the passenger exhaust manifold gasket blow out. It would make noise when it was cold and then quite down as the manifold heated up and expanded. Changing the manifold and gasket took care of the problem. I probably didn't need to change the manifold, but the kit was only 75 bucks from rock auto so I figured it was cheap insurance. I had to lift the engine on the passenger side to get the manifold out, but no broken studs made life easier. Took about 4 hrs at home with no hoist.

My 14 does it, It has almost since new. Im approaching 60,000 miles and I've just dismissed it as normal. I was wondering if its something within the cats or exhaust system somewhere.

There's a lot of moisture that drains out the muffler and resonator until it warms up. You may be hearing the moisture in the exhaust, draining out the weep holes.

Mine makes the same noise at the tailpipe FWIW.

Mine sounds like that. It's really hard to notice. Once it heats up it disappears. I wouldn't worry.
