The ford dealer where I am is a joke - just picked up the truck from them after paying for a $250 diagnostic. Say I need a "Whole new fuel system and all 8 injectors" for $3100, fuel pressure was low. Nothing more specific then that. They let it sit for 5 days with no work so I went and grabbed it.
So, lets figure it out eh?
Truck has 170.5k on it.
New Injectors #2 and #5 at 165k miles.
New ICP and EPS at 165k miles.
I have a whine on acceleration that goes away when warm. Truck idles fine, acceleration while cold is a little rough, but not bad. Goes away when warm. To help try and qualify - it runs better now then it did with #2 and #5 out, but still not butter smooth.
FICM voltage is good. IPR looks good - I've got torque pro. I have an exhaust leak, guessing in the rear bellows as well - but its a different sound (train horn), and comes and goes separately depending on boost
Any ideas? I'm not at all close to another Ford Dealership - and will be towing again next week.
The "whine" you are referencing could be a bunch of things: Idler Pulley, worn CAC Boot, your AC compressor, a bearing staring to fail in alternator or water pump starting to fail, dead rabbit goo wrapped in the serpentine belt....
If you want "butter smooth" running motor then the "whine" you are referencing is probably not related. Could be FICM, more likely stiction. Try a 5w40 full synthetic diesel oil and one of the oil additives like HSS or Archoil.
Yeah I had it at the dealer to fix the bellows leak then they decided to go down the fuel system rabbit hole. I told them repeatedly just to fix the exhaust leak - it did not go well.
New Edit. just read the repair order:
needs 8 INJ. 4.00 hr DIAG. Run Fuel pressure test 40PSI Run Turbo Position Test, Run FICM performance test, run cly balance test. Cold Inj Dropping out cold cust denied repair.
No indication what injectors are dropping. 2 and 5 are less then 5k old. Assuming turbo and FICM are good as there are no notes after them. I watch FICM on my scanguage.
Sounds like I need to do the blue-spring mod, but may have taken out all the injectors already. I run WOT ALOT towing heavy.....
Sat and talked to the Diesel Tech -
per his Diag - Fuel pressure is 65psi which is excellent, injector #3 failed HOT, not cold. Y-pipe by turbo is shot. He was a bit in disbelief at the previous dealer saying pressure was bad and 8 injectors needed. He didnt quite call them crooks....I'm tempted to...
Anyone heard of a injector failing hot? Balance apparently is good cold, but it drops out as it gets warmer so its down on power and throwing a misfire code. I JUST replaced #5, and of course labor is the game here. I'm half tempted just to run #3.....
Any thoughts in the injector showing bad in the contribution hot, but ok cold? I haven't heard that being a common issue....but I've only been on here 6 months or so.
Contribution is a measure of cylinder power contribution, not specifically injector contribution. Cylinder compression going low will show as poor contribution. Usually compression gets better hot, but if there are ring, valve, or head gasket sealing issues it absolutely can get worse when hot. I'd ask for a hot leak-down test to rule out a physical sealing problem. It's a little more money right now to have a better direction for how you spend more money.
The tech had already buttoned up the truck when I got a hold of him.
New Y pipes to the turbo fixed the boost leak. I have a contribution report showing #4 down around -40, with some spikes at -60. Diag report shows 65psi for fuel pressure. There was a EGR Operation code, but he thought the exhaust leak may have triggered it. EGR cooler was replaced at 140k. The tech reiterated that he saw no need to do anything but replace #4. Vastly different then the first dealership.
I have added Archoil 9100 and #4 cleaned up nicely. just did a 240 mile pull, running great. I think I'm just going to run Archoil from now on on every oil change and start replacing injectors if i need to with the friction modifier already in place.
