thermostat or climate control issue???

A new issue that just started is my heater putting out very cold air intermittently. I just today noticed that my engine temp goes from 170's to 190's when this happens (outside temp was 16 today), lasts for a few minutes then returns to normal heat and engine temp. Did it 3 times in a half hour trip at highway speeds today. I just had a blend door replaced last month so I am curious if this may be a symptom of another climate control problem or a bad stat? I did confirm that my coolant level was good and other than a bad glow plug code and CEL, tuner shows nothing else. Any insights?? Thanks.

have in a shop today who says this is likely a leaky head gasket sucking air at high temps causing a bypass of the heater core. this make any sense?

Not saying it is impossible, but how did they determine you had a leaky head gasket?

I lose approx one-half gallon of coolant every couple thousand miles and have already had the EGR coolers removed.

1/2 gallon per couple of thousand miles would probably be enough proof. Yikes!
