Mysterious 1985 Bodyside Protection Molding
#16
You know, the man at the parts counter at my local Ford dealer made this same mistake. The part numbers and the moldings above that both Number Dummy and Gary Lewis listed are wrong. (It's a miracle I ever found the correct ones.)
If you look on Page 40F (diagram P-15686) under "Exterior Moldings Section" on the parts CD, you will see the correct moldings, all starting with E5TZ.
That's TWICE you missed part numbers for the 1985/86 models, Gary.

And I'm really glad you found that. Notice that the 21048 stuff says "kit", meaning you get a roll of the stuff as the brochure said. But the later stuff is already cut for each specific location. In fact, as Rick previously pointed out, there is a piece for trucks with standard or western mirrors, and a different one for swing-lock mirrors.
Ok, this has to get documented on my web site. Rick, can you post some good close-up pics? Including one of the end with the door open to show the cross-section?

I. - Front fender molding:
II. - Front fender molding with a side view of the end cap:
III. - Door molding with section cut out to allow for the lower brace on the "Swing-Lock" mirrors: (Trucks with the "Western" or "Standard" mirrors got a different molding without this cut out.)
IV. - Door molding with cut-out for the key lock:
V. - Door molding cross section:
VI. - Back of the molding showing the double stick tape:

In 1985, Ford introduced a new type of 'pressure sensitive' upper body side mouldings that were also used in 1986.
I'm well aware of these E5TZ mouldings, but assumed that some members reading this thread would not be aware of the E0TZ mouldings.
The thing is, if I had known that 25+ years later, I'd be looking up mouldings for 1980/86 trucks, I would have paid more attention to the different types.
Some members of this forum are so cheap they wouldn't pay a nickel to watch an ant eat a bale of hay and...would complain if they were hung with a new rope!

But, I think the pictures of the molding I provided might look better if they were shown on an actual truck.
Due to the fact that *my* truck has new paint, and the moldings are NOS, I would be honored if you would use my truck for your website. As soon as the weather gets a little better and I get time off from work, I will clean her up and take some glamour shots.

In fact, I considered leaving mine off, because if any of these moldings become damaged, replacements are unobtainable.

My 85 had this molding as well. I had no idea that it was rare. But now that I think about it I haven't seen many with it around, mostly just the lower molding and around the wheel wells. The rubber on mine was completely shot and I ended up just completely getting rid of it when I repainted and replaced it with a painted pin stripe.

That says to me that the picture has been "photoshopped", although Photoshop didn't come out until 1988. In any event, they took some trouble to change out the trim, and there had to be a reason - like the trim was no longer available.
Rick - Thanks for pointing this out. As you said to me, I'm a nerd for this kind of thing, and have captured it on my web site where I'm, as David said, Figuring Out Random Details about these trucks.

Spencer - Since it is cut out for the door key and the mirrors I'm sure it is the same stuff. But, can you look at your certification label on the door post to get the build date? It looks like yours is a later build than either of the others, and I'd like to know when it was built for me web site.

There are two different door mouldings, one for the swing-lok mirrors, another for the Western and Passenger Car type mirrors.
Post #27: It's difficult to see a mirror "cut-out" in the upper pic, the lower pic isn't much clearer.
