You may want to remove the oil fill cap and see if hear hear the noise through the fill pipe, I had a problem with my 5.4 3v it's a quick check without pulling the valve cover.

Update: I know its old but the problem was the timing. I believe it was the timing guides shredded because the tensioner went bad. Got it fixed up!!
