plastic to metal drain pan

I have a 2011 f450 that I just bought and it has the plastic oil pan. I see that the newer 6.7 have the metal lower oil pan. Is there a good reason to change over to the metal pan? Is the 1/4 turn drain plug the problem?

Many of the composite pans leak at the drain plug. Ford has replaced some at no cost.

Had mine since new, no problems. My steel on my 7.3 pitted with rust so I don't know which problem is worse.

Sounds like as long it's not leaking don't worry about it. The pan looks like it is reasonably priced, but all the bolts a $2.00 to 4.00 ea might be the expensive part.

You can get a set of bolts on eBay fairly reasonable.

I would contact dealer to see if Ford will replace it on their dime.

I never had an issue on my 2011 until trade in at 125k.. never leaked. The plug never leaked either. Live on dirt roads with many bumps and pot holes... in and out all the time..

Is there any advantage to going with a mag hytec pan? I do like that at least this one appears to be serviceable without engine pull.

I saw the mag hytec pan too, looks nice, and said it add two extra quarts to the capasity. But AT $265.00, there ard lot lot of other "WANTS" ahead of it.

Personally, I say no advantage other than looks when you are jacked up 2 foot. Others might disagree, but if Ford felt the engine needed two additional quarts of oil and a finned oil pan, I believe the truck would come with it installed.

And yes, the lower oil pan is serviceable without removing the engine.

Didn't ford add two quarts of oil capacity to the 2017 powerstroke?

Yes, the 2017 has 15qt capacity. Is this due to a new lower oil pan design or the redesign of the upper and lower oil pan design? I do not know. Ford did up the HP and Torque for the 2017. Could this be the factors behind the increase capacity?

I have yet to see oil temps on my stock 2015 be a problem when towing.

Could also be due to the increased towing ratings....

I just recently changed my pan from plastic to metal. Bought a Dorman 264-452 oil pan from Amazon. Does NOT come with a gasket, used good RTV. I took the old plastic pan bolts off, ran a die down them further to the head and trimmed them off a little. Worked like a champ!
