Engine Number Decode

Hi There,

I'm new to the forum after recently purchasing 1965 F100. I'm trying to figure out the engine type and capacity for the purpose if spare parts.
The seller informed me it was a Cleveland but didn't know the engine capacity ?

The Engine numbers:
A062MK87315S

It also has stamping on the back of the block near oil pressure switch/bell housing (top) - DIF 613 T ?

Those numbers won't tell you very much. The quickest way to pick out a Cleveland if you aren't sure is to look at the fuel pump. The Cleveland fuel pump bolts are vertical, all the other engines are horizontal. Naturally this applies to the 351C, 351M and the 400. The quickest way to tell if you have a 351C or a 351M, 400 is the bellhousing. The 351C uses a small block bellhousing the top two bolts are about 5 inches apart. The 351M an 400 use the big block bellhousing. This is a picture of the 351C in my truck they don't look like any other Ford engine. You can see the fuel pump under the PS pump.

Hi Crop Duster
Thanks for the advice... your engine bay is a work of art ! Congratulations
Today I discovered the transmission is Big Block C6. so I guess it could be 351M or 400
Thanks for taking the time to respond
With thanks
Mick

About the easiest way to tell if you have a 351M or a 400 is to remove #1 spark plug bring the engine to top dead center, stick a small wooden dowel in the plug hole until it touches the piston and mark it. Then turn the engine 180 degrees and repeat the marking. That will give you the stroke, 3.5 inches= 351M, 4 inches= 400.

For what it's worth, the engines that came from the factory in 1965 F100s were two I - 6s of 240 and 300 cubic inch sizes and one V8 - a 352 cubic inch FE engine with 2 bbl carb and single exhaust. I believe the D1 part of the casting number on your engine block indicates it was cast in 1971. D = 1970s decade and 1 the year.

Thanks so much for the advice, you certainly have extensive knowledge of these vehicle !

As mentioned I purchased the car as unfinished project, the workman ship is quite bad. I'm close on deciding if to tear down and re-start the project from beginning. Almost every aspect of the car has been shoddy work.

Anyway, tomorrow I will check the bore stroke and let you know the outcome. My gut feel the engine is 351 ? Its been converted to LPG gas also (not well and no installers certification).

I'm really keen to see internal pic of your truck if you don't mind ?

DIF = Dearborn Iron Foundry

Same state - different city - a moot point.

I know. I've got one book that says Dearborn and one that says Detroit. Plus that website. But you are correct, moot point since you can throw a rock from one to the other.
MicksTF100. Are you in Australia ? If so you are in the Mecca of 351 Clevelands.

There was a Detroit Iron Foundry - but it didn't do engines for Ford - and it is dismantled.

The Dearborn Iron Foundry is still in production mode.

Sort of interesting reading.

River Rouge

I have this book published in 1953 by Ford. It was in a pile of free books that the local library was letting go. My wife saw it an grabbed it for me. One thing it said about the Rouge that made me read it twice and say WHAT! Was that they wore out 7000 mops a month keeping the place clean. I haven't worn out even one in this place in the last 17 years.
