42" mobile tool box, $399.99

Hey all,

I finally admitted I outgrew my Craftsman toolbox set...been shopping for a wider unit (40"+) for a while now. Costco had a unit that they were selling for $499.99...in the store the other day I found they dropped it to $399.99 until 12/2 if anyone is interested.

My initial thoughts are it's a pretty well made box. Probably NOT for someone who wrenches 10 hours a day, but for virtually any home gear head, this is a good box. Sturdy (at least at the loads I'm putting in the drawers)...has a black "crinkle" finish so a damp cloth to get the dust off is all you really need to do to it.

Has two "rows" of drawers. The top unit has 6 drawers (3 narrow and 3 wide) and a removable/lockable "door". Drawers measure 22 1/4" on the wide ones, 2 @ 10 1/2", and one at about 12 1/4".

The "base" has one full width drawer, 5 "wide" drawers (22 1/4"), and 4 "narrow" drawers (12 1/4"). All drawers come with the rubber no slip liners.

If I can find a grommet/cap big enough, I may drill a hole through the back and run a power strip into the top of the toolbox (so I can put the battery chargers up top)...other than that, for me at least it's pretty good as is.

Nowhere near done organizing it and finding all the "orphan" tools floating around the garage, but here are some pics:

Great write up. I've been eyeing this particular toolbox and the 41" CAT toolbox at Costco for a while now. It's a hard decision, and I am impressed with this box. I wish my Costco had the CAT box in the store so I could compare the two side by side and finally make a decision.

I'm VERY happy with it so far...inspired me to get more efficient socket storage (rails), etc...now the old Craftsman can be dedicated to woodworking tools.

I really like that Kirkland box. It looks like a very good box at a good price. The one thing I like about the CAT box is the fact that it has a power strip already mounted. If you decide to mount a power strip on your box, please update us on how it works out.

I'll probably mess with that over the weekend...maybe Sunday. Running the Ex in a parade on Saturday.

...plus the new outdoor kitchen stuff arrived yesterday so I'm itching to start the process on that winter project.

LOVIN IT. Still haven't found a grommet big enough to let me run power inside the top lid portion, but that's on me for not having time to look for one. Drawers are still working fine, latches too.

I did take some rough sandpaper to the bottom of one of the latches - it would not always click into place when shutting the drawer, but the slightest upward pressure on the drawer handle would let it click into place. Guessing when it was mounted it was done a little bit off. 2 minutes with some aggressive sandpaper to the bottom of the plastic bit and it works just fine.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad the box is working out for you. I think I'm going to pull the trigger and bring one of these home. I've been looking at them in the store for a while now and wanted to hear from someone who has been using one for a while before I bought one.
