Ford Racing Rear Cover

So I was looking for options for a new rear cover without needing to get a payment plan, and I'm posting here because there is NO info on the net. Since I just rebuilt my rear with 3.73's and a Detroit Truetrac it was time to change the gear lube anyways. I frequently tow a 5000# boat and want my rear nice and cool when it's working. Using a infrared temp gun on similar days it is a solid 15* cooler.

I was looking at the cover that came on the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT with the Track Pack option. The ones that come as a kit with the bolts M-4033-KA are like $170, without the bolts as a replacement part DR3Z-4033-B you can find the for $69.

So I read in the description on ford racing that this would not work for trucks. I did find a post from a guy who put one on a ranger. He found that the tone ring was the problem and had the cover ground to fit. The only other post I could find was for a guy with a Bronco, but he gave up. Since i have a grinder that was all it took to sell me on the idea, and so I waited for my amazon box to arrive.

Although they say it's not needed, my local NAPA had a gasket for it in stock.

I figured my local Tractor Supply would have the grade 8 bolts. I like to use flat and lock washers, so the length needed is 1-1/4".

The only other thing you will need is a metric bolt for the breather on the new cover, sorry I don't know the size. I used a banjo bolt with a copper washer from a trailer brake. On a similar note there is a small screw holding a plate over the vent hole on the cover, I took that off.

So all in all the cover is a nice piece.

I like that it has finns on the inside. Also the vent cover is for Mustang applications.

Here the fin that hits the tone ring has been removed(3rd from the right). I used a dremmel with a cut-off wheel and finished with an angle grinder. I had thought the angle grinder would eat it up but no. The fin is about 3/8" thick and it was way too slow.

next I removed the vent plate and washed down with brake clean. Goop, gasket, bolts to 25'# and fill.In the end it looks like this. The bolts I got were 1-1/2" and were too long. I will get this resolved soon but it holds oil just fine.

and this is what got removed from the cover

Nice cover with bearing support, but I don't think it offers much in the way of cooling compared to the Ford part which has fins inside and out.

Towing in the summer I would see 160*-185* at the pinion on longer trips, so increased cooling was the goal. If the next step for the truck was NOS or forced induction then that might be my choice.

I have the exact same cover on my truck. Did have to grind that fin but that's it. I hope I can use 4.10 gears with it. I plan on using a temp gauge on it.

Cover looks good. Any particular reason why you used Grade 8 bolts? Any generic bolt would have been fine in this application.

No real reason other than that's what the "kit"had. They were less than a half pound, and TSC sells them for 4.99 a pound

And whats up with using nuts as spacers?

As for cooling... I dont really see a fined aluminum cover doing much more than a regular aluminum cover

It does enough to make Ford think it was necessary on the Mustang. All of the new HD trucks come with finned aluminum covers too.

From a STEEL cover. And last I checked only the diesel trucks got the aluminum covers. Gassers still got steel

This rear end is bulletproof and overheat has never been an issue. I find it sticks out in a wrong way personally.

He said the bolts he bought were 1/2" too long and that he would fix it. For now, the bolts as spacers are fine.

Nice job! I wish I could find an aluminum one for my Super Duty that wont break my bank. I really like the fins on the inside, with all that surface area it should make a difference in the heat that gets "wicked" out.
Hey Fords4Me, The temps you were reading on your axle, where the temps taken after hauling or empty? I have one of the temp reading guns, I have been wanting to see just how hot my f350 got while towing the 5th wheel. Please let me know if and how the temp readings change with the new cover.
It looks great!

Its physics; to make it simple, the cooling is related to the surface area which is increased by adding fins.
