New here, but not to Ford's (F800 Big Job?)

Stu, Jim, Folks,
Thanks for the comments and suggestions on the rims. We shall see!
I believe this Big Job owner has forgot more about these than I may ever know. He mentioned changing these type of rims on older trucks, with three chains around them! And that the shop he sometimes uses, has a safety cage. (owns and operates a construction business, trucks, dozers etc.) He was trying to assure me that the tires were so good, I wouldn't have to worry about them for quite some time.
I know the suspense is building, hope to get a close up look and some pictures, mid next week. I have been trying to keep my expectations real low on this big truck.
One of those projects that I believe I could go through life without if I had too.
Regards,
Chris

Folks,
Talked to the owner and may do a viewing of the F800 Friday. Will try to take some pictures and post them for comments.
I think I have a list of things to review:
-Wheel type
-Body condition
-Transmission type
-Frame modifications
-Engine and running gear
-Interior condition
-VIN info
I did mention looking at a truck to the wife and she wasn't very pleased with the idea of another project! As she drove away in her new Edge!
Hope things are good in Ford land!
Regards,
Chris

Ford Big Job folks,
I had a chance to lay hands on the 56 Big Job F800 today. I did take some pictures but have not down loaded them for viewing.
It was in a old barn with no lights. So flash lights were used for the viewing.
I was expecting it to be fire engine red. It has been repainted and currently is Allis Chalmers orange!
Some things I noticed. Mice had got to the seat and ruined it.
Cab interior is very dull gray, headliner is falling out. Several controls that I have no idea what they are for. One handle on the steering column was for a pump on the fire truck.
Odometer has 18K miles.
We could not open the hood. Seems bound up in latch area? Maybe needs some lube.
right rear of lower cab has surface rust. Looks like it will have some holes if touched with a grinder.
Back window is cracked.
5 speed trans (no two speed rear) 5th location is towards the back of cab.
Has hood scoop.
Chrome grill (has surface rust)
Lots of drilled holes along the cab doors where the fire truck box was attached.
I believe the GVW is 25000 lb? Have to get this confirmed. Tried to get shot of the VIN plate.
Cab floor seemed solid, tough to inspect.
Front tires 9.00-20's on Dayton type rims! Duals on rear on Dayton type rims also! All tires look to be in fair shape.
Door bottom on the drivers side looked solid.
Truck might come with a "army" box that could be used on the back. I did not see it yet.
Has had a new clutch installed??
Exhaust pipes were in the cab.
Fire truck running boards had been torched off at the back of the cab.
Fenders looked pretty good, at least what I could see. Was very tight on pass side for viewing.
I tried to take some random pictures underneath.
Those rear springs are just huge. Brake drums are huge!
I didnt have much room behind that big steering wheel? Maybe the seat was forward??
Cab has cab lights I think 4?
Small square hole cut in back of cab on right side? About 2 x 2 inches.
At least one dent in the front of the hood lip.
Will try to get pictures up soon.
Happy New Year.
Regards,
Chris

Good news that it has Daytons. The rims will, however, still be multi-part and must be handled with respect. One Dayton style demountable rim was included in the 1970s recall effort, along with the RH-5° that we talk a lot about. It is called the Goodyear K-28. It has a front to back split in the rim base from the valve hole to the rear lip. Its side ring is a solid unbroken design. If you have these they should be replaced, ideally with tubeless 22.5s and new tubeless tires. Stu

Stu, Folks,
I think I see why they call these a Big Job now! It would be a big job to bring this back to good working order!
Here are some random pictures (not very good ones, sorry, conditions were poor at best to get pictures, I am surprised they came out this good):
Not sure this will buff out? Its got a pretty good crust. Probably would have been a sharp truck in red with chrome grill. I didn't see and custom cab logos. What was the difference?
9.00-20 tires on the front with 5 spoke Dayton style rims
5 spoke rear duals on the Dayton type rims. I think these are the R-5 type?
Dash has a few extra holes and things. Headliner is toast.
Right side Big Job emblem
Gas tank filler neck doesn't look right? pulled out of position? Window broke. hole in cab?
Right rear cab corner looks marginal, but still there.
Inside back of wheel well, driver side
Looks to be a leak in the transmission.
Looks like back of cab or frame was cut with torch??
Battery box area:
cab lights and scoop, front window looked tinted or hazy?? Back on page 2, why does the scoop on big jobs green dump look to be reversed?
the mice had fun
Battle ship gray interior. Transmission shifted into some of the gears Ok.
view under front bumper, not sure if that yellow is the oil pan?
Any comments are welcome. No I don't own it!

Chris

Reversed hood scoops all started yrs ago on the town plow trucks that would get
all plugged up with snow. Drivers always forgot or didn't care to shut them off.
Cable on the dash to disable it. Ford got the message and all 1960's trucks they
were reversed. I probably was the one mentioning chaining rims for a brush with
death with one and it was not a widow maker. I don't trust cages either because you
still have to take it out and put it on a truck. My way is to restrain the rim with
chains put about 10lbs in (so the ring stays put) put it on the truck an air it up.
You have Daytons on there so there is no problem to go to 22.5 tubless bought
anywhere. My 56 has 11 22.5 tubless all 10 of em. Think 56 was first year for that.
And yes I was the guy few yrs ago had one blow up. We were not changing the tire
either just removing for a brake job=missed me & my kid by millimeters (LUCKY)
and these things will fly up 300ft and go thru ya house. I probably was 18yrs old
sent to get 7 tons asphalt got on the scale back rim blew and took out the corner
of the scale house out & truck was like maybe 10yrs old too. I'm just saying!

The rims you have pictured are not the Goodyear K-28s. No split front to back in the rear picture, and front looks to be a three piece Firestone R-5°. Be sure to inspect all the rims to make sure a K-28 isn't hiding somewhere.
The wheel failure "big job" described, where the outer rear dual came apart violently, would be most likely attributable to a Firestone RH-5°. That design alone has the side rings on the outside of a dual mounting where all other designs have the side rings facing each other between the wheel assemblies. Stu

Thanks Guys! Happy 2017!
bigwin, After I wrote that about the Custom Cab. I looked back at the pictures and thought I could just barely see a script below the drivers window. Thanks. Whats the difference in a regular vs a custom cab?
Stu, It sure helped having some information on the rim options from you.
BigJob thanks for the info on the scoop orientation too!
Any ideas of the value of this truck? I am still in the looking mode and trying to gather information. At this time I really have no plan. I can see that this truck needs a lot of attention. Heavy equipment and tools to work on it. 2017 will be trying to sort out what projects to take on to keep me out of the recliner.

Chris

Ok still thinking on these big wheels. Help me understand how you go from a Dayton type wheel to a 22.5 solid type wheel. I just have never seen them changed over. Any pictures?
I see a old junk camper near me that has wheels that look like the 22.5 (safer style like Chuck's) wheels. Just thinking! I know that's dangerous!

Chris
