Do you have to pull the engine to mount the turbo?

not with the banks. and you really have to remove the turbo to remove the engine otherwise it hits the firewall.

Did someone say awhile back to bypass the glow plug relay? Would just plugging the truck on allow it to start? Or do I roll the dice and try to remove the auto store glow plugs?

Disabling glow plugs is a common tactic to safely use ether as a starting aid. Someone may have suggested to disable them so they don't melt down and cause you more problems. Most of them really are trash.

If you try to get the cheap glow plugs out, and they break, you're really not in any worse of a scenario as you are now with them in there.

Plugging the block heater in does aid in starting.

Is it possible for the tips to fall into the cylinder?

Yes, if they start to get crusty and fall apart...or mushroom so large on the end that they can't fit out through the hole.

If either of these scenarios occur, you're pulling the head anyway so there's really nothing to lose sleep over. If you break them upon removal, at least you didn't find out they fell apart by way of a huge compression loss.

I see. I assume the head bolts would probably be stuck and at risk of snapping off in the block as well?

Head bolts typically don't seize up, as they're too beefy to break and big enough to apply some serious torque.

Would it be better to take the head off first then try?

Try to pull the glow plugs out with head off? No, that'd be like walking over to the trash can, bringing it back to your desk, throwing a piece of paper into the trash can, then walking the trash can back to its place.

Best to try to remove the glow plugs, then remove the head if necessary. If someone just had the glow plugs changed, it shouldn't be a problem. Just check the ends that go into the chamber to make sure they're all in tact.

Haha. OK. Sounds like a good way to burn time. They were changed last year but are cheap and no longer work.

sounds like either autolite or champion plugs were put in it.
i don't understand why that crap is still sold with the fact they burn out as soon as put in.

If I had to guess, this truck was probably from factory chassis only. They made the frame longer for a bigger bed after the fact. Couldn't you shorten the frame and put a regular box on if you really wanted?
