1960 F250 4x4 Anamoly

Bought what I planned to use as a parts truck as I wasn't sure it was actually factory 4wd. It had 2wd cab installed on it with no bed. However as I began to tear it down we miraculously came across a VIN tag strewn about under the bench seat which lo and behold is the original. And wouldn't you know it clear as day shows it is factory 4wd so it stopped me from scavaging it any further. Now I have another build to put on the list. Check this out

The reason I state Anamoly in the thread title is the fact that this doesn't have a color code stamped on the VIN plate. I have never seen this before. Any thoughts?

I guess in rebuilding this truck I am free to go any which way with it.

Does it have the 4x4 only bracing in the cab? That's the dead give-away to me. Color codes get left blank for certain reasons, like maybe a special order color for a government entity. My 40 panel was most definitely orange originally and probably a county or state highway vehicle. No orange was a regular available choice in 40.
As late as the 70s you could special order a truck any color you wanted so there wouldn't be a standard paint code for, say, a Mary Kay pink truck.

1959/60 F100/250: The series code (first three digits of the VIN) only decodes to F100 or F250. The MODEL code defines whether it's a 2WD or 4WD

F25 = F250.

C = 292 2V

0 = 1960.

R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant.

54974 = 1960 Numerical Sequence of Assembly, the trucks specific serial number.

118" Wheelbase.

COLOR: Blank.*

F253 = F250 4WD .. 7,400 lbs. GVWR

09W = Assembled September (W) 9, 1960 (If the date was 09J - September [J] 9, 1959).

F = Borg-Warner T-98 4 Speed Manual Transmission.

04B:

04 = Spicer/Dana 60 Rear Axle / 4.56-1 / 5,200 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity.

B = Spicer/Dana 44 Front Driving Axle / 4.55-1 / 3,000 lbs. Front Axle Capacity.

7,400 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

146 net HP @ 3,800 RPM

1596 = Domestic Special Order number, the truck was ordered special by the original purchaser, not "bought off the lot."

*When there is no COLOR code, the truck was painted a non standard color per the original purchasers order, making it a Domestic Special Order.

Thank you both. just never seen a paint code left blank. I have quite a few other trucks with the 'S' designation for special but not blank.

No, the cab was implanted and doesn't have the braces and had a F100 vin tag in the glove box. the 4x front axle is still there as well as teh T-98 and Spicer TC. I have another truck to make a whole so it should be fun.

I will update on progress as we go along.

I've only heard about the 4x4 cab bracing, does anyone have a picture that shows the difference?

Here is a photo of the cab bracing. It was stock on 4x4 trucks and 750 and up models

Here is a cab brace. These braces are in all fridge 4x4 cabs but could be added to all cabs. Someone from the earlier ford forums posted a ford service bulletin about them a while back, I think it was Kevin/ Bigwin56F100
