exhaust smell / up pipe leak

at a stop sign I get a strong exhaust smell in the cab, enough to make me open the windows,

I had found this leak on the up pipe, would it be enough to cause the smell?

How much pressure is coming out of that pipe?
Could I put some high temp caulk or similar to help seal it or does it have to come off ?

Thanks in advance,

What I'm going to say here is that you might well want to look at your engine timing - probably retarded.

With the engine warmed up, it shouldn't really smell much.

I've driven my truck with the exhaust disconnected right under the cab, right at the transmission... and had the gearshift boot off such that I could actually /see/ the exhaust pipe. It was really loud... but to me it didn't really smell bad.

Now, you also might want to look at your fan/AC system - check where it's sucking from; make sure it's not blocked or has an air gap that's sucking from right next to the exhaust manifold.

thanks for the advice,
I'll double check the AC system and then move on to timing

these stock up pipes are a real pita to seal.
as I agree with the above, but the amount of pressure leaking directly reflects the amount of boost lost.

I have tried silicon, without success. now these all wear differently, so some could have good results, and some will be wasting their time.

I suggest at looking for replacement castings, type four has them in stock.

Muffler putty might work, but will eventually crack from the vibration so it's just a matter of how long between resealing it. NOS castings are available, I forget the price but want to say maybe $600-ish? The ATS system appealed to me but the total cost to refurb a used system pushed me to lean towards a new Banks or Hypermax.

I ended up getting a Banks when one came up used and don't have a lot into it. Turbo itself is special voodoo sauce from Banks that they charge an arm and a leg for and won't sell parts individually to rebuild. When the time comes I'll see what else I can get to fit that is more performance oriented.

LOL good trade off, voodoo sauce vs $600 up-pipe fix! Haha I'll have to use that line.

For the OP you might clean off that black and drive it a couple days to see if its still actively leaking. These ATS up pipes are weird and not tight when installed. But they seal up from heat and soot after a while it seems.
