There is a discussion about this very topic over in the 7.3 section as well and can be viewed at the link below.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-ck-4-oil.html

Just like Radium posted up, I found the following two links stating that Ford and Shell Rotella are working together to make a CK-4 compliant oil that is good to use in Ford PSD trucks.

Ford will approve new Shell Rotella CK-4 oil, but not FA-4 | Medium Duty Work Truck Info

Shell Position on new Ford Diesel Engine Oil Specification - Engine Builder Magazine

Don't go out buying up all the oil you can find just yet. These two multi-billion dollar companies will get it sorted out soon enough. There are way too many Ford trucks on the road to ignore the problem.

I don't doubt that. The only concern I have is will the Autozoo's of the world be smart enough to stock the right stuff while the retail segment figures this out?

That is certainly a concern, although we as consumers can buy just about anything on Amazon or Ebay nowadays. So, once a suitable alternative has been identified or Ford decides that the CK-4 is OK we can count on mail ordering it. This may not be the most convenient source or the one that provides instant gratification, but certainly a viable option in the meantime.

I've purchased a bunch of oil from Amazon, although lately with or without prime, they stopped shipping a lot of stuff to Alaska.

Interesting statement from this page
https://jobbersworldblog.com/tag/ck-4/

Field experience and Ford testing has shown that these older CJ-4 formulations provide acceptable 6.7L engine protection.

What happened to superior performance?

That fight was lost when ULSD was introduces against the wishes of the EMA due to lack of lubricity issues.

Luckily blending biodiesel into regular fuel took off about the same time so that took care of the lack of lubricity.

Maybe it's time to buy stock in Slick 50 since those commercials may be coming back around due to the oil thing.

I'm assuming sarcasm or humor, since slick 50 was a big scam... And even the FTC got involved in the settlement of their bogus claims.

I didn't say it worked. I was just pointing out their commercials were effective in selling lots of product. If word gets out the new oil is sub par, then a good snake oil salesman, like slick 50, could make a lot of money.

Gotcha. I was hoping that was what you meant...

I know nobody here runs straight dino but I do in my 6.7 Cummins at short intervals. I went to get my usual rotella-t and they didn't have it. I had to get rotella-t4 which I had never seen before.
So I figured it was CK4 and was all nervous yet later I see on the jug nowhere does it say that unless I missed it. So count me in scratching my head as well.

From what I can tell, Rotella T got relabelled T4 in keeping with their scheme (T4, T5, T6, etc.).

High content zinc & phosphorus oils help against premature engine wear. Especially in flat tappet, high load engines.
CJ-4 is one of these oils. Although not especially high in these additives, but just enough to be Cj-4 compliant.
Ck-4 has low levels of these needed additives. Thus the problem Ford has with them.

I run Mobil1, 0-50 racing oil in my off road sand cars. It has zinc & phosphorus levels at around 2000 ppm. Hard to find any oils like this anywhere. It is not legal to run on road since it causes damage to catalytic convertors and high emissions out the tail pipe. Says so right on the bottle.
The mobil1 5-40 td oil I use in my 6.7 SD, has around 1200ppm(iirr)of these additives.

So I assume the problem is from the epa regulating out the oil companies use of 'high polluting oils'..? regardless of high engine wear consequences..?

Yep that's the new CK-4 oil. Shell can't print the CK4 on the bottles until some time in December, but Shell has decided to go ahead and start shipping the CK-4 oil without the CK-4 print on the bottle.

Just changed oil in my Cummins. Had half a jug of rotella t and it is darker and stinkier than the t4. To me this is not a good sign. I guarantee this whole beef is about crankcase oil burning properties because some will end up in the exhaust.

The reason for the reduced ZDDP is to promote a longer life for the DPF. I can say with 106k miles on my truck the CJ4 oil did a good job with no signs of the DPF clogging up.
