Trying to Jog Members Memory

Hey family members back around 2010 or 2011 I think there was a thread showing at what angle the drive shaft needed to be to reduce vibration and help with the u joints but I can't seem to find it in the search tab. Do any of you remember the thread and can you recall it. If I am not mistaking it showed an angle gauge on the drive shaft showing the right degree it should be set on. And by the way I need to know at what angle should a 302 engine should be set at in a 52 F1. If there is information out there please point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance,
lbrauer

The angle of the engine is dictated by the angle of the carb on the intake...usually around 6 degrees. Whatever angle you end up with at the engine/trans is the angle you want at the pinion. IE, if the engine/trans is pointing down 6 degrees then you want the pinion pointing up 6 degrees. Lots of diagrams and tech info on the interweb.

You're probably thinking of this story, written by our very own, brilliant John Niolon. It's one of the best tutorials on driveline phasing I've ever read.

Somebody had posted a link to a video on driveshaft phasing some time ago. It's really an eye-opener...I'll try to find it and post the link.

That was quick: http://www.macsmotorcitygarage.com/2...e-and-phasing/

There is no "correct" angle to set an engine to, but with a carbed engine you want the carb mounting pad to be level with the vehicle at its normal going down the road rake. With the carb pad level the crankshaft will normally be angled down about 3 degrees.
The important part is to match the pinion angle to the engine angle, again with the vehicle at the angle it will be on the road. So if the engine is angled down 3 degrees you would want the pinion angled up 3 degrees. I have run up to 5 degree angle on a fuel injected engine to deal with front accessory clearances, but FI engines are not a picky about angle.
I have pictures of setting this up in my truck #2 build thread, I am running 4 degrees on that truck.
