I've got a rear camera that needs power. I'm thinking about powering it off the reverse lamps circuit in the rear, but I also want a switch up front to power it for checks down the road. I'm thinking about just powering it with another 12v hot line but that will back feed 12v to the reverse lamps also. I don't mind the lamps lighting up, that can be handy for tailgaters too, but will it mess anything else up? Truck is a stick shift also.
On a manual I can not see where there would be a problem other than legality of your reverse lights coming on while driving forward.
On mine a hooked the camera to an upfitter switch. You could use a diode in a simple circuit to eliminate the back feed.
Diode is the best way to keep from feeding power where you don't want it.
I don't know if you have the PAM (Parking Aid Module) in yours or not. I pulled
power from the module in the passenger kick panel. It wakes the head unit
so that it knows that you in reverse and can also power the camera.
If you want the diagram let me know and I'll post it for you.
Pretty sure I won't have the Pam, mine is on the basic end of the trucks. It was a work truck type truck. Thanks for the tips, I think I'll give it a shot

Most likely you don't but the basic harness might be there with a feed
from the reversing lights.
I'll attach the PMA wiring diagram and the connector pin diagram.
This also should come in handy if you can't find the wires for the PAM.
I attached the reversing lights diagram for you too.
Thank you!!!! That's awesome. Hey I've been having a bear of a time finding applicable wiring diagram for the factory trailer harness outputs as well for this truck. It was wired up to a connector when I bought it but I want to verify its right before installing my new plug socket and I can't get a difinitive chart of what's what. There are 8 pins on the plug.
I don't feel Awesome today. More like sick. Cough,Cough and a few hacks to go with it.
My throat feels like someone rubbed it with #40 grit. So I have to give up talking.
Anyway you want the trailer and hitch wiring harness if I understand you correctly?
I just had a thought what are you working on?
F-?
I have been giving you F-250 and F-350.
There might be some changes in the F450 and up diagrams I have not posted.
Norma, reverse light shown top-left of diagram. Just interrupt the + wire feeding your camera and solder in diode. At bottom or cathode side of diode, connect power wire from you new switch that you mount in your cab. With pictures like yours, I felt compelled to join the discussion!

Thank you for the diagrams and yes it's a 2004 f350 work truck. However I keep seeing reference to 7 pin and my harness is 8 pin and some of the colors don't match. I'm also not good at reading automotive diagrams, lots going on in today's cars. I suppose I need to get out the meter and test around.
So, one odd thing the plug coming off the factory harness has 8 wires coming off corresponding to the 8 pins on the truck. Two of them are solid blue, and the wiring I ripped out had both blue wires paired up to a single wire. Any idea what these two blue wires are?
The truck has an electric brake controller up front also. So I'm not sure how to diagnose what wore that would be.
