Just picked up an 87 L8000 with a CAT 3208

Hey guys

Just picked up a trade on an 1987 L8000 rollback with the Cat 3208/10 Speed. It appears to be in good, working condition - and I got it in trade for a 6.0 crew cab with a boatload of miles.

I wanted something I could haul one of my classic sports cars to shows with, as well as move my Massey-Ferguson around with.

Wondering if you guys had much advice or info with this combo. Also, not sure about being able to get this truck set up as a personal rig - figured some of you guys might have some advice on licensing and insuring something like this. I won't be using it often but it looks like it'll be extremely handy.

Also - would anyone be able to decode the VIN?
1FDXR80U9HVA09943

Thanks!

Welcome to FTE.

That looks like a pretty stout set up. What is the GVWR?

Last year I sold my white single axle when I downsized, I still have the black tandem.

Rock on. How many 3208 guys are here? I have heard mixed things about the motor, but CAT did sell a BUNCH of those engines - so they can't be as bad as people make them out to be.

This truck is actually showing to have been originally from New Brunswick prior to coming into the US through Idaho.

The 3208 in my tandem is non turbo so it`s a little underpowered but still a good motor, the 7.8 in my single axle had a lot more bottom end power and was much quieter.

Awesome! Thank you NumberDummy!
Heres a picture of us giving it another workout yesterday.

Got a small air leak somewhere, so gonna hit all the bellows and lines with a bottle of soapy water and go from there. Fortunately, everything else seems to work good.

Any of you guys ever swap Alcoa's on these things?

Insurance

I am currently rebuilding a C8000 and already have an IH Loadstar with a 25,000 GVRW. I'm in Ohio. For plates I just use the standard Ohio commercial plates and register them for their stated GVRW. However, I only put about 1,000 miles a year on the Loadstar so I think I may go to historic plates for the coming year.

As for Insurance, I use Nationwide. They have me listed as a farm (I own no land). They insure all my trailers, trucks, and even my pickup under that commercial policy for around $63 a month. I carry $1,000,000 in liability on the trucks along with full coverage and gap insurance on the pickup because it has a loan on it. It took my agent some talking to convince them that I am not a trucking company or a construction company (also insure a backhoe, 3 tractors, and a small dozer). I always jump through the hoops they ask me to though as far as things like usage surveys and pictures of each truck, just to make sure things stay well greased.

Hope this helps!

Regarding Alcoa wheels--I think those Daytons are going to cause real troubles for swap like that. You would need new hubs to accommodate Budd type wheels. You may find this to be an expensive proposition!

Welcome,
Nice, another great looking Louisville.
I have a LN8000 in Australia. One of only 485 built here.
3208's were a good motor if you are familiar with its service history and not looking to go long haul trucking with it. I like them but I don't like the non rebuild-ability of em. mine has a 6V53 Driptroit.
I agree with 85 on the wheel swap as really the only practical and affordable thing to do is a complete front axle swap. Rears would be more trouble than its worth.
Licencing. 1987 could go down the historic vehicle route, seeing as your not using it much and for your own gear. There is a bit of discussion going around on U.S historic truck forums regarding changes taking place with authorities clamping down on non compliance. As long as your hauling your own stuff and "Not for Hire." This is my understanding from an outsider anyway.

Enjoy your new ride.
