Transmission troubles

I've really enjoyed putting a bunch of miles on the old F100. I was driving it as much as I could up until a couple weeks ago. I was heading to a friends doing about 70mph on the highway and wanted to eccelarate, when the boost peaked the transmission blew again. For the second time this summer I had to get a tow home. I knew the small Toyota G52 transmission wasn't very strong to begin with so now it's time to upgrade to something that can handle the 350lb/ft the little VW is making. I found a tranny W58 out of a Toyota Supra that should hold up. It has a little taller gearing so my rpm will drop from 2500 at 60mph to 2300 witch should be just fine. I'll have to stay off the fuel pedal in 5th gear if I want it to stay together.

If you find that with the W58 when you are in 4th gear, for example, and the shift lever acts like it is in Neutral (flops from side to side a LOT) then you might enjoy a BillyM shift kit. I put a kit in my 1985 Toyota Celica Convertible and it is sweet to drive now.

Thanks, I was reading about that the other day. I can get into the top of the trans fairly easily when it's in the truck so I'll just wait and see how it feels. I put a 8" extension on the shifter so any amount of play makes it feel sloppy.

My 66’ F100 already has a 2011 CVPI front end I swapped a couple years ago. I was tired of the wheel hop and wanted to get rid of the leaf springs in the back. This is the 8.8 from a 2000 crown vic. I had the rear end freshened up with new bearings, 3.55 gears and a LSD. It’s 65” wide and 5 on 4.5 to match the front. I love the way the truck drives with the TDI diesel but at some point I may put a coyote in the truck so now it will be able to handle that when the time comes.

The 2000 Crown vic axle is 65.5” wide from face to face. It’s a great match for the CV front end.

2000 crown vic 8.8 is 65.5” wide.

Modified crown vic watts link. Holds the rear end perfectly centred.

My 4 link.

CV sway bar and park brake cables worked out with a little creativity.

1970 mustang tank, requires .5” cut off the inside of each frame rail top and bottom.

fuel fill in the bed floor

The suspension is a cheap 4 link kit from amazon, but I’m utilizing the stock 4 link mount bracket on the CV axle. The top link use stock front leaf spring perch holes in the frame and lowers are welded on with a 1/2” bolt to locate them. The lower shock mounts are from the kit, upper I made. The CV watts links were shortened and tabs welded inside the frame rails. The stock CV sway bar also mounts up with just two tabs on the frame sides for the links. The coil overs are QA1 single adjustable with 170# springs. Stock CV flex lines with one more flex line going up to the frame.

The fuel tank is a 1970 mustang model, I welded a bung in for the fuel return line. I’ll fill it with a marine type filler that should sit close to flush in the wood bed. I’m going to use PRC to seal the filler neck to the tank to prevent leaks.
