I got all my parts and information from Van Pelt. I even called them because I had a mix and match of used parts from 2 different 3 speeds and needed to make one good one. They were an excellent help over the phone and got me the parts I needed. Very reasonable too. VANPELT SALES LLC - your ford flathead source since 2006

It is a B-W (T-86) design licensed and produced by Ford. Most of the parts are unique to Ford, and there are some differences between 48 - mid '51, and mid-51 on. Van Pelt sells a book that is excellent by all reports and it explains the differences, as well as showing all the steps to disassembly/reassembly.

The gearsets, basically all internals, are the same between the side and toploaders. B-W mostly sold toploaders, to IH and other companies. Although the Ford trannies are based on a B-W design, like I said you need to use Ford parts. It could be the changes I referred to were made when they changed the trucks to side shift, worth verifying exactly what you have.
I don't remember exactly when the changes in these Ford trans took place, and yours may not be original. Mac VanPelt can tell you how to identify the differences, either buy the book or call him. As I recall the most obvious change has to do with the splines for the 1 - R gear, but there are other changes less obvious. For instance, the parts book shows all thru '55 using caged needle bearings on the input and the countershaft. Mine is a '52 and has the later style, loose needle bearings. I think that change is one of the ones made in '51.
I fought a problem with the snap ring on the output shaft bearing popping out for 5 years. I called Mac to ask what he knew about it. He thought a minute, then asked if there was a shim on the front of the bearing. I said Yes. He said, for my trans that should have been tossed, that was for the earlier models. I tossed it, problems solved! He knows EVERYTHING about these trannies.
