Oil leaks questions

Went to a mechanic today to diagnose where oil is leaking from. He used dye to find leaking areas.

1) Oil pan gasket
2) Oil filter adapter

And I have a leaking power steering box.

Truck; 1995 F350 7.4 460 gas motor, automatic with 164,000.

The leaks are pretty minor. To repair they are saying the entire engine needs to come out. So the minor repairs are actually a big job. Their recommendation is not to fix it.... Is this sound advice?

thanks

In my opinion, small leaks could very well lead to larger leaks, which could lead to a serious issue. You may notice these leaks now, but if they worsen at the wrong time, like on the highway, then you could end up with a costly mistake by overlooking these so-called minor repairs.

Best of luck to you.

When I got my truck from my dad the oil pan gasket was leaking. I simply checked to ensure the bolts were properly torqued. They weren't and the leak stopped once they were tight.

I'm not sure if your mechanic checked them but it worked for me.

In my opinion minor leaks always occur with vehicles over time. You and Klondon are both right. One can leave them and monitor them and sometimes they do get worse. Occasionally they get worse rapidly.

And leaks tell you they're not empty!

But really, the pan gasket on a 97 351w is a one piece rubber gasket. Not likely it's going to catastrophically blow out. As stated the pan bolts might be a touch loose. The oil filter adapter can be fixed in the truck, and its under oil system pressure so I'd consider fixing it. Good time to eliminate the oil to water oil cooler too. Then you can run an FL-1A instead of the puny FL-820S.

Edit: not enough coffee. I see now you said 460 not 351w, ignore my technical info.

This is starting to get just a little out of hand here... I can understand trying to get your product out there, but spamming every thread you can is annoying. To make things worse, it seems in this case you saw the word leak and went right to selling you product without bothering to read his post. Smoke is not the answer for oil leak diagnosis. Oil dye and running the engine, just as the shop he took it to did, is the proper test. Before you go trying to sell your product stop and think if it really has an application for the problem at hand.

I watched your video and read your description. It's a smoke tester that also has the ability of adding oil dye. As for looking for leaks in oil and power steering, the dye alone is enough to easily find the leak. I'm not bashing on your product. Smoke testers are wonderful devices, I use them quiet a lot at work. But when it comes to finding an oil leak nothings is as simple and as quick as a steam clean of the engine, some dye and runtime.
