I just did this upgrade yesterday, having read this thread I used my vise as mentioned and popped the case open to get a look at the filter, looked about the same as the one in your video. I suspect the filter was never changed and my truck has 189,000 miles on it. Thanks for putting the video together, I love these forums for things like this and the conversation it creates.

Ohhhh Boyeee -- I thought that but didn't want to ask it. I thought Mark had commented on the media in the filter being pretty neat stuff - fine filtering with good flow. I'll keep one eye closed when I read his answer to your question... :-/

I think that depends on how cold it gets where you are. From what I've heard, and I was already out of Ford by then, the new filter and the old pump will have problems around -20 to -30F.

Thank You Mark that is good to know. I don't think I will be seeing anything
much below -1ºF round here on the worst of winters. But if I move to Idaho
I think it can get a bit colder.

Whew...! I'm thinking Bismic (Mark) may still want my truck now...

I don't plan on taking it that far north and I think the coldest start it has seen is in the low 40s, possibly a high 30s....

Yes, that's what I heard.
If you go to order a new pump for your '03, it comes up as the '06 part number. Understand the issue of no longer being there, got that myself.

Did the old pump have cold temp problems with the original design filter. That then would make it an issue no matter the filter.

Got it.

So if you are in a climate that gets to -20 to -30F do not put the '08 1/2 filtration on the previous model trans.

I wonder if slapping a pan heater on the trans pan would avoid the issue.

A silicon heater pad on my '03 and no problems up here in MN for over 50K. If I can't plug in I let it just idle until trans is over 70 degrees or so.

great video jack... little late for this comment... but one thing i would point out a bit missed in the video is that the filter sits down in that recess.. which the filter would displace some of that fluid sitting there... so it wouldnt be a full qt sitting in the base of the pan... would probably be more along the lines of 1/2 qt because of all the plastic surrounding the filter.. but empty without the filter, yeah it take a full qt..

that said i would like to someday see the 6.4 pan filter cut apart after use like you did with yours.. to see what all it catches... for me the video just confirms theres no real NEED to convert to the newer filter since the original design is doing its job...

I know mark said it wasnt a concern to him on your trans fluid temps taking so long to warm up to 160... but my trannys usually up to temp by time ive gotten 10 minutes down the road..

hey jack can you do me a favor... can you measure the dimensions of the old pan and compare it to the new pan you just put on... friend on another boards being told the newer pan wont fit because its larger over all than the old style... but i thought the only space that really changed was the point where the filter sat, so it shouldnt effect his truck...

hes being told there would a clearance issue with the exhaust... i think those people are more referring to the aftermarket non-ford pans which are nothing but a big square box of aluminum... but hes taking it to mean the factory updated pan...

The old pan is 40 miles away so it’s not happening quickly. The new pan fits fine or else all the people here would have jumped on an issue. Depth is changed but I’ll see if I have any pictures that show.

I could flood the post with multiple singular pan images, but maybe this one says it all. Not sure I used it in the video. 6.0L pan on left, 6.4L pan n the right.

Edit - Yep it's in there, 4:40 into the vid.
