Both your filter and Jack's filter look normal to me for the miles on them. If you only had 1,000 miles on that filter I'd be concerned.

For catching particles of the size shown, and even smaller, it is very effective. What the pre-2008 filter isn't good for is catching the particles that are too small for you to see. Those are the ones that stick solenoids. These bigger pieces can't get into the solenoids.

Thanks for mentioning that Mark. It puts into perspective more so to upgrade the filter. Now I feel better about doing the flip and doing the video. Sounds like we don't need a database, just upgrade the filter and pan.

In case anybody didn't see it that well, at the end I did a cost analysis over 120k miles. Although now I realize I didn't put in the table the 6.0 changes were done every 30k miles.

Nice Jack!

How many miles on that filter? Is that your original with 200k miles?

Yep. Installed at the transmission plant May, 2003, 205,000 miles.

Interesting. I can see how they would consider that filter good for the life of the tranny. It doesn't look anywhere near "plugged up" after 200k. A lot of clean filter surface still left.

I agree. I think it's was a good design. It really was a tough decision to flip to the new design at 200k. But Mark's comment 5 posts up that the pass through particles, even at that size, can hang up the spools gives me the serenity it was a good move. And supports the comment I made in the video that Ford would not have invested into the change if they didn't find an improvement. I was a little uncomfortable putting that in there.

It was an easy decision. The new filter is functionally better. The fluid stays cleaner, which helps everything, especially the solenoids.

The real kicker is that the new filter is less expensive than the old filter and external filter. So engineering and the bean counters were both happy. That's a rarity.

What jumped out at me was the foot note about the 2006+ have "minor changes to the lube circuits"...

As in: what were those changes for?

On edit: Duh -- it says there are minor changes between the years: '03, '04 and '05 -- there I go reading into something again... doh!!

I think it's reasonable to say a good portion of that materiel on the filter is from original break-in. I think a transmission service is a good idea at 10k miles to eliminate break-in material from floating around the trans for thousands of miles.

Well I should be able to answer that question at the next filter and oil change.
My trans is only 18 Mo old at about 30K miles.

Sean,

Pete mentioned being able to crack the seal at the bottom of the assembly and pull the screen out. I didn't do that all that well. I ended up using a hacksaw to cause a stress riser at the connection, but I didn't go deep enough. I was trying to not cut all the way through and contaminate the screen, but I should have done that better. To get all the debris out of the housing though you may need to wash it out if the o-ring seal doesn't draw out everything
