Any know how Ford is activating the PTO on the new SD? With any luck it's not a cable thru the floor

Anyone know how Ford is activating the PTO on the 17 SD? With any luck it's not a cable thru the floor like my F550 is. Would be nice if they are using an up fitter switch. Ordered a Platinum truck and don't want the cable in my floor. My goal is to use a VMAC, PTO driven, and hidden under the truck. This is a commercial grade air compressor capable of high volume air without having a huge air compressor taking up space in the bed. We take our toy hauler to the beach often and must deflate all tires on the rig to 15lbs or so to make it in & out without getting stuck! The problem is to inflate all these tires, 4 on the truck, 6 on the 5th wheel, and 2 on the 12' flatbed I pull behind the 5th wheel (yes I pull doubles) back up takes forever. That's 12 tires all going back up from 15 lbs to 80. It takes a while to say the least. My concern is the old style cable thru the floor to turn on the PTO. Anyone know how Ford is activating the PTO?

Not sure what your dealer is telling you, but the PTO provision is only the hard parts and access on the trans. The PTO and install are still done by the upfitter, aka you or whoever you pay to do it. That said, Chelsea does make electric shift ptos.

No more cable shift PTO's. All PTO's for new automatics are electric over hydraulic. Long story short, all the PTO needs is a 12vdc signal. You're up fitter switch will work perfect. If you need any more information, let me know. We sell Chelsea PTO's.

Will be needing it when the truck gets here. Glad to hear they are electric over hydraulic. Do you know much on the VMAC? what does it need? I know VMAC also make a belt driven compressor that sits in the place of the stock 2nd alternator but doesn't perform as well as the PTO driven one from what I understand. Just really want quick, reliable, high volume air when needed. Any suggestions?

We typically install Hydraulic systems so we're not too familiar with the compressor systems. I can tell you though that you the PTO's that mount to these automatics are nothing like the Spicer/Fuller PTO's. They have a clutch pack engagement system and thus they are very expensive. I would estimate just the PTO for this truck to be around $1500.00. After that, you would still need more components to run a compressor. Although I don't know for sure, I'm guessing the VMAC under the hood option would be cheaper than this. Because of this, its probably your best route.

My F550 has the spicer/fuller PTO to run the hydraulic crane and then flip the switch on the IMT crane controller to switch over to use the hydraulic driven compressor when needed. Problem is I don't want that huge hydraulic compressor in my new truck and don't need the hydraulics on the new truck anyhow. Trying to put the pics of it up but this thing will not let me for some reason. If I understand the brochure on the VMAC right it sits right next to the tranny, but you may be right the belt driven one may be the way to go here. Ordered the truck with the PTO provision so I have options! Which I like!

This system works flawlessly but do not want it in my personal daily driver. This is the first hydraulic driven compressor I've had and its performance is unbelievable. Will keep up with any air needs a person might have and works great on my service truck but again just is not practical for my daily driver.

Anyone have a PTO driven generator on here? I am looking for something that will produce minimum of 30AMPs but would love a 50AMP hook up for my fiver.

Not PTO driven but I have a LinkArc (now Premier) welder on my Jeep Rubicon. Consists of a pricey alternator

and a control box. Can weld with it or run 110v tools off it. It welds great. We use it often on trails when we go as a group someone is always breaking something. We've built drive lines, welded spider gears together, built motor mounts, and countless other smaller repairs on the trail with it. Unfortunately it is not PTO driven like you were asking for but it is priceless when needed along the trail.

Don't mind the dirt-it's a Jeep thing! Lol

Interested in the same.. I've read a few threads about this company, but no real reviews of someone having it installed, using it, and loving it... Their marketing makes it sound.. perfect.

12kW – 50 amps @ 240 volt and 100 amps @ 120 volt;
15kW – 62.5 amps @ 240 volt and 125 amps @ 120 volt;
"however in all cases load must be properly balanced"

Real Power | Limitless AC Power - Wherever You Can Drive Real Power® - A fully integrated AC power generation system designed exclusively for your truck.

They have a note for 2017 SD of what you must order (... uh.. PTO). But not to order a system from them until they've had a 2017 in their shop to outfit it.

Its been a long time, but we have done hydraulic generators before. We installed a hydraulic motor on the generator shaft. The toughest part was holding the generator within the proper RPM range. As load increases and then decreases, the system tends to hunt or lope for a bit. All that is from memory though as its been 10+ years ago. I'll ask our sales guys if any of them have hyd. generator applications. Stay tuned.
