68000 orig miles, swap the old, rebuild the newer?

I've got a 99 F350 Dually, it has a sick motor 208000. Blowing oil out of dipstick, have to dump a lot of oil in it, running rough ect. I also have a 97 with 68000 runs like a dream. I know they changed things from 97 to 99, but some advise whether to swap them out or rebuild the 99. Sticker says 99 was built in Feb 99.

Either one is an option. The big changes between the two can be unbolted from the new block and bolted on the old one.

If you rob the block out of the 97, what are you going to do for a motor on it?

Why would you want to rim that low mileage engine from the OBS? Is the truck in bad shape?

I've got a buddy who has wanted the cab and various parts, but I couldn't let it go with a 7.3 with only 68 on it. I just picked the 99 up, for a song, I've started to do a bit of research if swapping blocks is the way to go. I figured I'd ask those in the know. I could read for months and not know what these guys have on the top of their head.

z31- no it's in pretty good shape. No rust, a couple dings, clear coat peeled in places. 2 wheel drive is the killer up here snow, ice and mud. Pure madness with 2wd.

I just put an OBS engine in my SD. The only changes I made were plugging the fuel pump hole using a freeze plug from Ford $3 and changing intake plenums to 3".

The block was stripped of all accessories and everything from the SD bolted up. I am even running the OBS cam that has the fuel pump lobe

Broken piston, piston rings that's it unless you got a cracked head or block.

Cracked piston head too, I've seen it in a pic or two around here too...valve being bent is another (slightly to allow for escape but where the piston could move still)

I'll tear the 99 down first, I'm just trying to cover all my options. Thanks to all,

I'm in the middle of a swap - '94.5 7.3L into my 2000 SD. It's my understanding the '97 has the 10-bolt intake plenum, but you would want to make sure before calling it. When it comes time for me to deal with the 8-bolt intake plenum of the '94.5, I will be getting a billet plenum. The front cover is different from a SD, but that only matters if you plan to use the SD oil pickup tube and HPOP reservoir.

Riffraff diesel now sell the fuel pump hole freeze plug, since others have taken this same step.

The pre-SD 7.3L driver-side exhaust manifold is different from the SD, so that needs to be swapped. My manifolds had no soot, but I'm popping them loose, having them planed, and I'm installing some good exhaust gaskets. I don't want exhaust leaks any time soon.
