Resale value of Ecoboost trucks

I scanned the plethora of threads and posts here on FTE and for the life of me, I remember seeing a couple posts where someone had asserted that the value of a used ecoboost is lower than it's N/A siblings due to reliability issues.

Well, I was on Edmunds this morning to test that assertion and in my area, my truck configured with the 3.5L EB is worth about $600 more than my truck configured with the 5.0L. If that's actually the case, that would mean that my EB (engine) is worth more than I paid for it.

This post is to challenge the person(s) who posted that info and to request a link or some proof of their opinion because I can't substantiate their argument with my research.

Discussion please.

That's pretty bad considering it was a $1,950 option (I think).

Whats pretty bad? in 2011 The 5.0L was $1000 over the price of the base 3.7L V-6 and the EB was $500 over the 5.0L. Now it's $600 over the 5.0L.

My belief is that in the immediate future selling an F-150 with an EcoBoost will be like selling a house with a pool. Some buyers will flock to you because of it, many will stay away for the same reason, and overall value of the item for sale will not waver in either direction. Those who want a pool will get one, same as those who want an EcoBoost.

Will your collection of potential buyers be smaller due to the doubts in some people's minds about buying a used turbo-charged truck without a warranty? Sure, but it will still sell at a fair price.

I was used truck shopping a year ago when I bought my new F150. Everything used in the price range I was looking for had the 5.0L engine, and EcoBoost trucks were either more money or had more miles.

Around here, they command a premium for sure, and don't seem to reduce the pool of buyers. I'm sure some people avoid them, but I sure had no issues selling mine.

I would want one even if it was a worthless option when it came time to sell. But it doesn't seem to be the case.

I just confirmed it.. for the 2012 model year, it was a $1,095 option over the V8 (as in $1,095 more than the 5.0 V8). I don't know what year yours is nor do I know how many miles it has.

http://www.autoblog.com/buy/2012-For...n._WB/pricing/

Engine: 5.0L V8 FFV - STD
Engine: 3.5L V6 EcoBoost - $1,095

My 2012 lost only $6,000 in value (or retained 78% of its value) after four years and 40k miles but that may be an exception since I bought it at $10,000 off MSRP. It had a V8 and that was the trade-in value, I know I could have gotten more if I sold it private party.

If I bought it at MSRP, I'd retained decent 55% of the value but nobody buys at MSRP.

I see in your signature it's a 2011.. I checked that.. $750 option, not $1,095. So I'd say you did better. Ford's extensive advertising on the Ecoboost got a lot of attention.

NADA Guides show it's $500 more for that engine if it's used so.. from $750 to $500, that means it has retained 66% of its value which is more than the truck.

The price of the ecoboost got stupid. I got a smoking hot deal on my truck at about 22% off MSRP. I won't source a truck just because of an engine as I'm perfectly fine with the base 3.5L or the V-8. I'd take another EB truck without hesitation but in order for me to buy any truck again, the dealer and or Ford will have to throw money at me like it's confetti.

I feel the same way with my former 2012 XLT with V8. MSRP $40k, bought at $29k. I only wanted four doors and 4x4, didn't care about anything else or the color. VERY happy with the deal! Don't think I can get EB at that price either... I don't think you'll see many discounts for the EB anyway.

Good thread.

On Kelley a 2012 XLT SuperCrew (100,000 miles) with the EB is about $1200 up on a 5.0. On NADA they value the EB $500 over a 5.0.

"Your price may vary" since these guys are all in bed with the industry.......

We also need to consider that many of the 5.0's were heavily discounted. NADA and Kelley do not factor that in. I got $10k off of my 2012 truck with a $40k MSRP. Would I get the discount if it had EB? I could wind up spending $5k more since it was in high demand.

Lots of variables on that. I got $13,000 off MSRP on my '13 and my '15. Both EcoBoost.

Valid point.

I got $9500 off and a good trade when I bought my 2012 Lariat 5.0

Didn't that engine cost different amounts depending on what options package you had?
In the end, the entire truck depreciates, and the smartest move is not to buy one at all. But we like trucks, and we are spending our own money, so to me, it makes sense to buy the engine you want.
