6.7 end of the road

So what will be the future of Fords diesel engine. I've had the 7.3, 6.0, and now the 6.7. What's next? We've have to talk about something, this truck is boring. It just keeps going and going and going. I hope I didn't just jinx myself.

The 6.7 is Ford's "energizer" edition truck...

I'm thinking this motor will be around until Ford can't get it to pass the emissions standards of the future.

This engine will be around until Ford no longer deems it the most profitable solution.

This engine has been around for awhile now. Ford keeps getting more power out of it. I'm thinking if they didn't change it with the new 17s, the 6.7 may be around for several years to come. I've not research the 17 model all that much to see what changes they have made.(to the engine) Kinda scared to, then I'll probably want one.
As soon as the warranty is up, a delete is in my future.
Andre, you more than likely hit the nail on the head.

Quite true... It will be here until it either will not pass some future emissions or fuel economy standards, or they turn up the power to keep up with the Joneses and they start seeing too many warranty returns as the platform is now pushed beyond the design spec.
Take a look at the Cummins 5.9 / 6.7 history and you can pretty well chart where the Ford 6.7 will go..

The new emission standards are getting pretty tough, but of course I have no idea where the current 2017 6.7 stands in terms of meeting them or what would be required to do so... Emission was the reason the 7.3 was scraped and no need to mention why the 6.0 and 6.4 were...

My main concern is that as the epa keeps tightening the emissions on diesels there is going to be a breaking point where the average person cannot afford to either buy or maintain one. We basically are now at the point that most can't afford the risk of keeping one out of warranty. The breaking point is approaching where we wil have to accept going up grades a little slower with a gasser that can also be used as a kiddy coach with out adverse problems to the engine.

That's where I'm at Mike... If I trade in the big fella on a 17, it will be a gasser....

My opinion is that the 6.7 will be around until the diesel-electric or diesel hybrid is introduced. 200hp electric combined with 200hp diesel would be my guess.

Is that the platform that breaks the 100 K threshold?

After the feds kill the diesel the next step is probably CNG.
I work at a facility where some of the 35'ers are already going with natural gas. The drivers have said there is a minor reduction in power but nothing major. The CNG tanks are almost twice the size of diesel but I have no clue how long they last. Haven't heard of any full size Semis going natural yet.
However, I plan on keeping my 6.7 until they pry it from my cold dead fingers.

Believe it or not, diesels can be made to run off of literally any liquid or gaseous combustible fuel... The current fuels used in diesels have a lot of BTU content, but I'd be willing to bet that there are others that will do just as well if not better...
It's just a matter of money / profit... Oh, and Oil.....

Military rigs run on about any type if liquid but pee...

However they have relaxed emissions regs.

I'd love a diesel hybrid, but double the hp. 400 electric and 400 ICE. Oh and 40 or so MPG too..

Can't help but think that the past eight years and the direction we take for the next four could spell the end of the 6.7L. We may be living in the golden age of Diesels.

bruce...
