HELP! BUYING A 66 F100

Hey there! I'm new to the forum and wanted to see if I could get some advice. Anything would be appreciated. I live in Michigan, the motor city. Family and I love classic cars and muscle but it's getting harder and harder to find quality here. So we venture off into southern states. My question is simple but yet difficult. There is a 1966 Ford F100 Custom Cab for sale in Tennessee. Which is 10 hours from me. The seller has been great and has been answering all my questions and providing photos. But I've never bought something this old and for 4K (what he's asking) is like to get my money's worth. What should I look for or ask for before I make a 10 hour trip? What is something like this worth?

My advice is keep looking. Don't pay less necessarily, but get a better truck.

Thank you for that. Made me step back into reality a little. Can I ask why you think that? Thanks again for the feedback

I don't mind modified trucks but - there's a lot of non-original stuff there: motor, box floor, seat, probably transmission, paint, carpet, bumper, wheels etc. The main thing though is that these trucks hide their rust very well and if you can see a little, there is lots more to find later.
My '66 is almost original (paint and mechanical), rust-free and basically "correct". It's worth about US$6000-7000 if I have to sell it in a hurry. I looked for a long time, found it in the SW desert and bought it over the phone. You need a trip to Phoenix, right?

Engine has been swapped out - likely was originally a 6 cylinder (hood emblem). I'd be curious if the automatic has been swapped, too. Looks like it probably was originally an automatic, probably a C4 with the 6 cylinder. Might still be in use behind a newer motor.

Steering wheel has been swapped out - often the horn doesn't work in those cases.

Some diamond plate on the dash. I wonder if it is covering a huge hole in the dashboard? No radio showing in the usual place so it either never had one or it was removed.

Aftermarket wheels. Seat has been recovered. Looks like it might be the original seat but not original material on it. Carpets were added. Originally would have been a rubber mat. Either can trap water between it and the floorboards so those can be a suspect area.

Dash pad has been removed. Windshield washer jug is not stock. Originally would have been a bag instead of a jug. Looks a bit Jerry-rigged, but might work fine.

It is a Custom Cab from all appearances. Looks to have been repainted at least once before as the rubber plugs are all painted over. The grille appears to have a decent dent in it on the drivers side.

Might be the picture, but the header looks like it might have a crack in it on the drivers side front tube. Could be deceiving.

I was looking some more at the various pictures and noticed the dash pad is present in one of the pics with some cracks in it. Then in other pictures the dash pad is missing completely. I guess some time span between pictures. At least enough time to rip the pad out...

Pic's 18 & 19 show a lot of rust under the seat, as well as an inline fuel filter below the tank, not a bad thing, I would rather see it inside the frame. Anytime I see steel plate in the bed over a wood floor it usually means a lot of rot, and rust which equals a lot of work. I'd pass. Good luck

in picture 18 you can see the rear support under the floor is mostly gone! Those cab floors are rotten all the way through and the carpet is hiding it on the inside.

The paint is that faux patina to make it look like a rat rod- barn find. I wouldn't buy it if the price was more than 1200.

I bought a 63 f100 with running engine, daily driver of the previous owner in Oregon. I kept it out there for a year and then moved to New Jersey where I live now and started my build. I have replaced all the cab corners, floor supports, floors and part of the roof due to rust. And mine was a west coast truck where we don't use salt. I drove out to Tennessee to buy a short flare side bed with spare tire mount (which that truck is missing the bracket) and it was full of rust in the fenders. The one you are looking at there is probably full of that rust like my fenders were.

I paid 1000 bucks for the truck in Oregon. Paid 1000 for shipping it to New Jersey from Washington state. Still a great truck compared to what people are pedaling these days.

DONT LOWER YOUR STANDARDS TO INCREASE YOUR ODDS,

In my opinion for 4K it better not need ANY rust repair. At most some surface rust that will sand right off. And should be reliable and drivable anywhere as is. These trucks vary in pricing tremendously on where your looking and who's selling.

Flareside tailgate with HUGE F O R D block letters is from a 1980/87 F100/350.

L/rear fender has the cutout for spare tire clearance, but the mounting bracket for the spare tire is missing (see upper pic below).

PASS! It's a rusty old rolling pile of miseries with parts swapped from lawd only knows what.
